WILDCATS SPLIT SASKATCHEWAN SERIES

The Westman Wildcats were in Melville on the weekend for a pair of games against the Weyburn Gold Wings and the Melville Fox FM Prairie Fire. Saturday nights contest put them up against Weyburn and the Wildcats came away with a 6-3 victory. Goal scorers were Samantha Dyck (Boissevain), with 2 shorthanded goals, Karissa Haney (Killarney), Bailee Goodon (Boissevain), Amanda Coey, and Karissa Kirkup all with singles. Darby Peaslee faced 34 shots in net.

Sunday afternoons game was against hometown Melville and the Wildcats came out on the short end of 5-2 loss. It was a very tight game tied at 2-2 with 2:19 remaining in the third period when Melville scored 3 unanswered goals to seal the deal. Both of Westmans goals came off of the hot stick of Amanda Coey. Darby Peaslee stopped 35 shots in the losing effort.

2010/2011 WESTMAN WILDCATS SEASON UNDERWAY

Eleven first year Wildcats and seven returning vets were eager to get the new season started in Swift Current this past Friday night.  The cats came out flying against the home team Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats and won the game 5 - 1.  Amanda Coey (Brandon) opened the scoring with an assist from Kaitlyn Whaley (Douglas) followed nine seconds later on a marker from Teajin Barkley (Virden) from Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine) in the first period.  The second period saw one goal scored by Kiara De Kezel with assists going to Elise Badiou (Wawanesa) and Jaycee Magwood (Killarney).  Again quickly in the third period the Wildcats struck for 2 more a minute apart with the first from Jessica Vallotton (Glenboro) assisted by Bree Vanhove (Medora) and De Kezel and the final tally coming off the stick of Karissa Kirkup (Virden) assisted by Megan Robertson (Boissevain).  Swift Current scored their only marker later in the third.  Darby Peaslee (Souris) played a strong game between the pipes.

Saturday saw the Wildcats up against last years Esso Cup hosts the Regina Rebels and came out on the losing end of a 3 - 0 score.  Rachelle Lougheed (Melita) got the start in goal for Westman and Regina scored the only goal in the first period on a powerplay.  Regina finished out the scoring with 2 goals in the second a minute and a half apart with the first again being a powerplay goal.

Westman's second game of the day put them up against the Calgary Chaos in a very tight game that saw both teams trade chances back and forth.  Calgary scored the only goal of the game with 9 seconds left in the first period and the Wildcats shorthanded 2 players.  Darby Peaslee made many outstanding saves in the Wildcat net.

The final game of the tournament had Westman against Swift Current and ended in a 3 - 1 Swift Current victory.  Swift Current opened the scoring midway through the second on a powerplay and then scored 2 more to finish out the second.  The Wildcats kept battling and scored the only goal of the the third period when Amanda Coey scored with assists going to Karissa Kirkup & Gina Williams (Souris).  Darby Peaslee was in net.

A great opening weekend for the Wildcats who will be back in Saskatchewan this upcoming weekend to play Weyburn on Saturday night and then take on the Melville Fox FM Prairie Fire Sunday afternoon.

WILDCAT SEASON BEGINS

The Westman Wildcats held a very competitive tryout camp over the Labour Day weekend. With 33 girls taking part in the 3 day tryout the team had some very difficult decisions to make.

The roster will be posted on this site in the next few days.

The team immediately gets to work with practices beginning Tuesday and Wednesday in Souris before heading to Swift Current this weekend for a tournament.

Teams taking part are the Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats, Regina Rebels, Calgary Chaos, and the Westman Wildcats.

1 DAY UNTIL WILDCAT CAMP

Camp is fast approaching for the 2010/2011 season and the Wildcat coaching staff are looking forward to a fresh crop of hockey talent from the Westman region.

Just a reminder to all girls aged 93, 94, 95, 96 and 97 in the Westman region to register online on this website under the heading FALL CAMP REGISTRATION.

WILDCATS COMPLETE COACHING STAFF ADDITIONS

The Westman Wildcats are pleased to announce that Kary Kirkup of Virden will be joining the coaching staff this year.

Kary was a goaltender back in his playing days with the Southwest Cougars and then went on to coach several years of minor hockey in Portage la Prairie.

Kirkup has also coached at the elite level and the Wildcats are very excited to have someone with his experience and to add the goaltending coaching component to the program.

ROBERTSON ADDED TO WILDCAT COACHING STAFF

 

The Westman Wildcats regional female midget hockey program is pleased to announce that Mike Robertson of Virden has joined their coaching staff.

Mike has played Junior and College hockey, and has over 20 years of coaching experience in all ranks of minor hockey and at the elite level as well.

Robertson has taught power skating clinics for 14 years and has also had involvement in many hockey schools over the years.

The Wildcats would like to welcome Mike and are excited about what he will bring to the team.

WILDCATS MAKE ADDITION TO COACHING STAFF

The Westman Wildcats are pleased to announce the addition of Stephen Vandenberghe to its coaching staff . Vandenberghe is originally from the Reston area and is presently teaching at Crocus Plains in Brandon.  Stephen has over 20 years of coaching experience from all ages of minor hockey to many years at the elite level including several of Hockey Manitoba's Programs of Excellence at the Bantam and Midget levels.  Part of his resume also includes scouting experience and involvement in several hockey schools and camps.  The Wildcats welcome Stephen and look forward to his fresh and innovative coaching style.

Wildcats Have Joined the MFMHL

 

The Westman Wildcats regional female midget hockey team have joined the Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League beginning in the fall of 2010.

The Wildcats have joined six other rural regions that form the MFMHL and participation in this league will allow them to participate in the Provincial playoffs and an opportunity for a spot in the Esso Cup National Championship.

The Wildcats will still continue to participate in all of the same Showcase tournaments and weekends they have in the past while being a member of the MFMHL.
