Wildcats defeat Yellowhead 6-3 on Wednesday night in Hartney
Jan 19, 2017, 12:00 am

The Westman Wildcats hosted the Yellowhead Chiefs in their third meeting of the regular season on Wednesday night in Hartney.

The Chiefs came out flying early in the opening period, putting a lot of sustained pressure on the Wildcats in their own zone.  They were rewarded just over 6 minutes into the game as Tatum Amy buried a wrist shot top shelf on a two on one rush.  They would continue to put pressure on with their aggressive forecheck until the Wildcats got their first powerplay opportunity of the night.  The Wildcats moved the puck around quickly and created a couple of odd man situations down low.  They would capitalize on one as Aly O'Hara brought the puck out from below the goal line and shot the puck low into the goaltender's feet which caused a rebound to come out into the slot right onto the stick of Cammy Clyne who buried it into the back of the net as she drove hard to the net.  O'Hara and Vallotton picked up the assists. The Wildcats would sustain the pressure for the remainder of the period as they went on the powerplay two more times.  Shots in the period were 12-3 in favour of Westman.  Yellowhead would take 3 of 4 minor penalties.

The 2nd period started out much like the 1st as the Chiefs, after killing off an early man advantage, managed to put some sustained pressure on the Wildcats once again.  However, it was the Wildcats who would strike first with just over 7 minutes remaining in the period as Aly O' Hara scored on a wraparound, shorthanded, to make it a 2-1 game. Andrea Sanderson picked up the assist. That seemed to spark the Wildcats as Andrea Sanderson scored on a partial breakaway to make it 3-1.  Clyne and Williams picked up the assists.  The period would end 3-1 with the Chiefs out shooting the Wildcats 12-5. Westman would take both minor penalties in the period.

In the 3rd period the Josee Casavant scored an early goal off a rebound at the 18:38 mark of the period to make it 4-1 with the assists going to Haley Wickham and Shae Vallotton.  But the Chiefs would respond with two goals from Mazur and Amy before the 13:54 mark of the period to make it 4-3. Tori Williams, however, would score on a 2 on 1 at the 10:59 mark to stretch the lead bake out to 5-3. Mckenzie Meek picked up the assist.  That seemed to settle things down a bit as the Wildcats were able to hold onto the lead until the end of the game.  Haley Wickham picked up an empty netter to make it 6-3. The Wildcats were outshot in the 3rd period 10-4 and each team took a minor.

Jenna Marshall picked up the win in net, stopping 22 of 25 shots.

Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team has advanced to the semifinals at the IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship, finishing with a perfect 3-0-0 record in the preliminary round after a 1-0 overtime win against the United States.

Ashton Bell (Deloraine, Man./Westman, MFMHL) netted the overtime winner for Canada, scoring 1:57 into the extra period to lift Canada to victory. Danika Ranger (Uxbridge, Ont./Durham, PWHL) earned the shutout between the pipes, turning away all 23 of the Americans attempts.

“That goal was just a great team effort; they freed up the puck for me and I got a clear shot on net. It was a great game all the way out to the D and up to the forwards, and our goalie had an amazing game. It was just a great team win.”

Bell on her overtime winner and Canada’s performance

“I think the whole team played very well and very aggressive. We all had that drive to play against the U.S. team because it’s such a great rivalry and I think we battled hard throughout the whole game and it was just a great game overall.”

Wildcats Complete Another Weekend Road Sweep
Jan 8, 2017, 8:30 pm

The Westman Wildcats completed a very difficult 3 game road trip with a 3-2 victory over Eastman today in Steinbach.

After a scoreless 1st period, Andrea Sanderson got the ball rolling with a breakaway goal at the 13:41 mark of the 2nd period off a nice feed from Shae Vallotton.  The Wildcats would extend the lead 3 minutes later when Shae Vallotton hammered home a point shot top shelf to make it 2-0.  Andrea Sanderson picked up the assist on the goal. Eastman would respond a minute and a half later as they crashed the net and buried a rebound to make it 2-1.  That is how the period would end.

The Selects pushed hard in the 3rd period and managed to score on the powerplay at the 13:32 mark.  The Wildcats would have a good response, however, on the following shift as Andrea Sanderson ripped a shot over the goaltender's glove to restore the one goal lead with 12:36 remaining.  Mckenzie Meek picked up the assist on the play.  The Wildcats would shut it down from there despite a couple of shaky moments to preserve the victory.

Kaitie Slator picked up the win in net stopping 27 of 29 shots.  The Wildcats took 2 of 5 minor penalties.
