Phillips Named ECAC Rookie of the Week

ALBANY, N.Y. (1/4/10) -   Colgate freshman Brittany Phillips (Lauder, Man.) of the women’s hockey team was named the ECAC Rookie of the Week as chosen by the league coaches, it was announced Monday, Jan. 4.
Phillips had four points in a 5-4 overtime victory at No. 10 Syracuse this weekend, posting two goals and two assists. Her first goal sparked the Raiders scoring after trailing 3-0 in the first period. Phillips’ second goal was the game-winner, made with 10 seconds left on the overtime clock. She also had a hand in the last two regulation goals, earning an assist on the game-tying goal with 15 seconds left in the match.
This is the first weekly award for Phillips and the first time a Colgate player has won a weekly award so far this season.
Colgate (5-12-3, 2-5-3) returns to the ice this Friday, Jan. 8 when they travel to Niagara. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.

Wildcats off to Mac’s International Midget Tournament in Calgary

The Westman Wildcats regional Female Midget Hockey team will be loading the bus Christmas morning to head west to Calgary to compete in the Mac’s International Midget Tournament.

This is one of North Americas most sought after invites for Midget teams as 40 teams, 25 male and 15 female, will compete in the week long affair to have the opportunity to be the 2010 Mac Champion.

The Wildcats will begin play on Boxing Day morning against the Calgary Chaos.

The Westman squad will than compete against The Red Deer Chiefs, Notre Dame Hounds and the St Albert Slash, to complete their play in the pool.

This is the third year the Westman squad has been invited and they are Manitoba’s lone team in this strong field.

Wildcats Have Annual 3 on 3 Tourney with Alumni


The Westman Wildcats will host their annual 3 on 3 mini tournament with returning alumni on Tuesday night.

The Wildcat program rings in the Xmas holidays with the help of their alumni hosting their annual tournament at Hartney arena.

With many of the Alumni returning from their college teams for the holidays it is a good way to get old and new together to catch up on everyone’s activities for the first half of the season.

Wildcats Tie and Lose During Home Stand

The Westman Wildcats had a tie and a loss during their Banner Raising weekend.

On Saturday the Cats hosted the Pembina Valley Hawks and came out on the short end of a 4-3 game. Deloraine’s Kiara DeKezel scored a pair with Oak Lake’s Megan Bailey notching the Cats other marker.

Sunday had the Eastman Selects in Hartney during the official National Championship Banner Raising ceremony.

The pregame events were speakers from local government as well as Hockey Manitoba. The last year’s team was recognized and finally the unveiling of the National Championship Banner.

The game proved to be a saw off with it ending in a 2-2 tie.  Westman goal scores were Bailey and DeKezel again this game.

The Wildcats now get ready to leave on Christmas day to travel to Calgary to participate in the Mac’s International Midget Tournament.

Westman Wildcats Play Home Stand This Weekend


The Westman Wildcats regional female midget hockey team have two home games this weekend in the friendly confines of the Hartney arena.

The Wildcats will welcome the Pembina Valley Hawks for a tilt on Saturday afternoon followed by  the Eastman Selects visiting on Sunday. Both games will begin at three o’clock  in Hartney.

Sundays game will have a pre-game ceremony with the official Esso Cup National Banner being raised in the Hartney arena.

The Westman Wildcats will then travel to Calgary from the 25th to the 31st to compete in the Mac’s International Midget Tournament.

Wildcats Go 3-2 at Notre Dame Hounds Showcase

The Westman Wildcats Regional Female Midget Hockey team competed in the Notre Dame Hounds Annual Showcase last weekend and came away with a three and two record. The Wildcats joined 15 other female midget teams from Western Canada in this Annual Showcase in Wilcox Saskatchewan.

The Cats first action was on Thursday morning and brought them up against the Pursuit of Excellence team from Kelowna. The Wildcats came up on the short end of a 4-0 to the tournaments eventual champions.

Westmans next opponents were the Weyburn Goldwings of the Saskatchewan AAA League. The Wildcats got on the winning side of things in this contest by a three nothing score. Kelsie Sanderson of Melita, Meg Bailey of Oak lake and Brandi Pollock of Virden did the scoring for the Wildcats while Darby Peaslee of Souris got the shut out in the Cat net.

Friday had the Wildcats facing off against the St Albert Slash and the Cats lost this game 4-1. Bailey scored the Cats lone goal in this contest.

Saturday’s game had the Westman squad hitting the ice against the Lloydminster Steelers. The Wildcats notched their second win of the tournament putting up a four one score. Bailey and Sanderson again found the scoreboard for the Cats while Jessica Vallotton of Glenboro and Amanda Coey of Brandon also added singles.

The Wildcats final game on Sunday had them facing the Winnipeg Titans and the Cats took their tournament record to 3 and 2 with a 3-1 win.

Bailey scored a pair while Souris’s Sheryl Kaskiw added the Cats other goal.

The Wildcats are at home for a pair this weekend with Pembina Valley visiting Hartney on Saturday and Eastman coming out on Sunday. Sunday’s game will have the official Banner raising for the National Championship Banner the program won last April.
