MFMHL ANNOUNCES AWARDS

JAYCEE MAGWOOD NAMED MVP and LEADS ALL-STAR SELECTIONS

Forward Jaycee Magwood of the Westman Wildcats has been selected as the 2013-14 MFMHL Most Valuable Player based on voting by league members. The 5' 8" 150 lb. power forward has been the Wildcats scoring leader all season and plays big minutes against the oppositions top players along with power play and penalty kill.The second year midget had 23 goals and 20 assists in 28 regular season games for the Wildcats good for 4th in league scoring. Magwood the Wildcats Captain hails from Killarney where she maintains an 88% GPA in High School.

The MFMHL is pleased to announce its 2013-14 First and Second Team All-star Selections based on member voting. The All-star Teams see 6 out of 8 MFMHL teams represented with the Westman Wildcats and Central Plains Capitals each placing 3 players on the two teams. The Pembina Valley Hawks and Norman Wild each had 2 players selected with the Winnipeg Avros and Yellowhead Chiefs having 1 player each earn all-star status.

CONGRATS TO THE MFMHL ALL-STARS

The Westman Wildcats took a 2-0 stranglehold on the MFMHL championship series with a solid 4-1 victory in Hartney this afternoon. Jaedon Cooke got the Wildcats on the scoreboard 18:29 mark into the 1st period with a high wrist shot over the glove of the PV goaltender. Assists on the goal went to Kenzie Robinson and KJ Wallace. The Wildcats continued to push the pace throughout the period and had numerous scoring chances. PV managed to generate some nice scoring chances on the power play but Sky Brown stood tall. Shots in the period were 10-10.

In the 2nd period, it was more of the same as the Wildcats continued to press. They were rewarded with 5:19 remaining in the period as KJ Wallace roofed a shot high to the blocker side off the faceoff to make it a 2 goal lead. Jaedon Cooke picked up the lone assist. Shots in the period were 10-9 in favour of PV.

In the 3rd the Wildcats stretched the lead to 3-0 at the 17:17 mark as Ashton Bell walked the puck off the wall and buried a shot to the blocker side. Missy Hunt and Gina Williams picked up the assists. The Wildcats controlled the play until PV scored on a power play opportunity to make it a two goal game. However, the Wildcats responded soon after at the 6:14 mark on their own power play as Megan Robertson buried a shot glove side to restore the 3 goal lead. Ashton Bell picked up the lone assist. That is how the game ended, 4-1 for Westman. Shots on goal in the 3rd period were 8-8.

Final shots on goal were 28-27 in favour of PV.

The Wildcats had 5 minor penalties and PV had 3.

Game 3 is Wednesday night in Morden at 7:30 PM

Ashton Bell was the overtime hero last night as she re-directed a nice pass from Jaycee Magwood into the net at the 8:32 mark of the 2nd overtime period to give the Westman Wildcats a 1-0 series lead against the Pembina Valley Hawks in the MFMHL Finals. Megan Robertson picked up the other assist on the play.

Missy Hunt opened the scoring with 3:59 remaining in the 1st period on the power play with a wrist shot from the half wall off the rush. Courtney Ganske and Sky Brown picked up the assists. Shots on goal in the period were 12-8 in favour of PV.

Kate Friesen tied it up for PV early in the 2nd period on the power play. Both teams traded power play opportunities throughout the period. Jaycee Magwood put the Wildcats ahead with 17 seconds remaining in the period when she drove hard to the near post and stuffed the puck in short side. Jossa Danis picked up the assist on the play. Shots in the 2nd were 13-6 in favour of PV.

The 3rd period saw both teams again trade power play opportunities. Lauren Keen tied up the game on a 4 on 3 power play chance when buried a rebound chance. The period ended tied. Shots on goal were 10-9 in favour of PV.

Early in the 1st overtime period the Wildcats allowed Keen to break free on a breakaway and were forced to take her down. But PV took an Interference call of their own to make it a 4 on 4 situation. There was some great end to end play and both goalies were forced to come up with huge saves. First it was Sky Brown who was forced to stop Keen on her second breakaway chance as she had slipped out of the box after the PV penalty. Next it was Taylor Reimer's turn to shine as she stopped Jaedon Cooke on a breakaway. Shots were 5-4 in favour of Westman. We are going to a second OT.

Cue Ashton Bell's heroics in the 2nd overtime period with 8:23 remaining. The Wildcats outshot PV 6-3 in this OT period.

Final shots on net were 42-34 in favour of PV.

The Wildcats had 10 penalties to the Hawks 8.

Game 2 of the Final is Sunday at 2:00 PM in Hartney

The Wildcats defeated the Winnipeg Avros 2-1 in game 4 in Hartney this afternoon to clinch the semi-final series 3 games to 1.

The 1st period was scoreless as both teams threw pucks to the net. The Avros did a great job of blocking shots. Shots on goal in the period were 11-2 in favour of the Avros.

The 2nd period saw more of the same. The Avros did a good job of getting pucks through to the net and managed to create some great scoring chances on the power play. Sky Brown made some key saves to keep the game scoreless. As the period wore on the Wildcats began to take over the puck possession game and began to get their forecheck and cycle game working. Megan Robertson was rewarded with some hard work as she buried a shot past the screened Avros goalie off a scramble play. Jaycee Magwood and Ashton Bell picked up the assists. The Wildcats kept the pressure up by dumping pucks deep, continuing to press for the two goal lead. It paid off when Katie Crowe dumped the puck into the corner and a strange bounce landed right on the stick of Ashton Bell who buried the shot into the back of the net. The 2nd period ended 2-0. Shots on goal in the period were 16-10 in favour of the Avros.

In the 3rd the Wildcats forechecked with energy and intelligence and completely hemmed in the Avros for large spans of time. The Avros managed to generate a few shots to the net on the power play but Sky Brown was able to handle everything that came her way. The Avros did make it interesting with 4:04 remaining as Elias buried a rebound off a shot from the point. That was all the Wildcats would give up though as they held on for the 2-1 victory. Shots in the 3rd period were 9 -3 in favour of the Avros.

Final shots were 36-15 in favour of the Avros. Penalties were 7 against the Wildcats and 4 against the Avros.

The Wildcats now advance to the league final to face the winner of the Yellowhead vs Pembina Valley series in which Pembina Valley leads 2 games to 1.

The Westman Wildcats were soundly defeated 4-0 by a much hungrier Winnipeg Avros tonight at the Keith Bodley Arena in Winnipeg. The Avros played with desperation throughout the game and managed to score 3 powerplay goals on 10 powerplays en-route to the victory.

The Avros outshot the Wildcats 33-32. Sky Brown suffered the loss in net.

Game 4 is Sunday, March 16th at 2:00 PM in Hartney.

Jaycee Magwood scored her 2nd goal of the game with 8:20 remaining in the second overtime to lead the Westman Wildcats to victory in game 2 over the visiting Winnipeg Avros. The Wildcats lead the series 2-0.

After a scoreless 1st period, the Avros scored the lone goal of the 2nd period at the 3:48 mark to go into the intermission up 1-0.

In the 3rd the Avros bottled up the Wildcats with a patient forecheck and were able to extend the lead with 11:06 remaining on a shorthanded goal. The Wildcats, however, did not quit and began to push relentlessly to get back into the game. Jaycee Magwood finally buried a puck with 7:09 remaining in regulation off a nice pass from Missy Hunt to get Westman within a goal. Ashton Bell picked up the other assist. The Wildcats tied the game on the powerplay with 3:07 remaining as Katie Crowe scored on a shot from the point, assisted by KJ Wallace.

Overtime

The first overtime settled nothing as the Wildcats carried the majority of the play but were unable to finish off any chances.

At 8:20 of the 2nd overtime, Jaycee Magwood put home the winning goal on a goal mouth scramble. Ashton Bell picked up the lone assist.

Final shots on net were 37-30 in favour of Westman.

Game 3 of the series is Friday night in Winnipeg at 7:25 PM at the Keith Bodley Arena.

The Wildcats traveled to Winnipeg on Sunday, March 2nd to face the 2nd place Winnipeg Avros in Gm. 1 of the MFMHL semi-final.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early 2-0 1st period lead. Gina Williams scored first at the 17:55 mark on a screened shot assisted by Jenna Patterson and Jossa Danis. Next it was Amie Hunt scoring at the 13:01 mark on a shot that deflected off a Winnipeg defenseman. Lexie Kalynuk assisted on the goal. Winnipeg scored within the final minute of the period to make it 2-1. Shots on goal in the period were 11-10 in favour of the Avros.

In the 2nd period there was no scoring. Shots on goal in the period were 9 apiece.

In the 3rd period the Avros scored at the 17:48 mark on the powerplay to tie the game. The Wildcats managed to kill a 4 minute penalty at the end of the period and into overtime. Shots on goal in the period were 11-5 in favour of Westman.

Jenna Patterson was the overtime hero at the 8:10 mark as she deflected a Katie Crowe shot over the shoulder of the Avros goalie to win the game.

Game 2 of the series is Tuesday, March 11th in Hartney at 7:30 PM. Game 3 in back in Winnipeg on Friday, March 14th at 7:25 PM at the Keith Bodley Arena.

Congratulations to Sky Brown from Virden, MB, who has committed to attend school at, and play hockey with, the Castleton State College Spartans.  Sky is a 1^st year Wildcat and will be attending Castleton State College in the fall of 2014.  She will be taking General Studies in year one.  

Sky has been lights out for the Wildcats since Christmas, going 7-0 in league play, giving up only 5 goals and posting 4 shutouts for an incredible 0.71 GAA. Her overall record in league play is 11-4-5 with 4 shutouts and a stingy 1.58 GAA.  In the 1^st round of playoffs, Sky backed the Wildcats to a sweep of the 2^nd highest scoring team in the league, the Norman Wild.  In that series she surrendered only 1 goal in 3 games. Sky was an integral part of the Wildcats championship run at the annual Mac’s tournament in Calgary over Christmas break this year going 3-0-1 and backstopping the team to a 3-2 overtime victory in the semi-final and a thrilling 2-1 triple-overtime victory in the final.

Castleton State College is a public liberal arts college located in Castleton, Vermont.  It has an enrollment of 2000 students and offers more than 20 undergraduate programs as well as Master’s degrees in Education and Accounting. 

The Spartans female hockey team is an NCAA Division III program that is a member of the ECAC (Eastern Collegiate Athletics Conference).

The Westman Wildcats wish Sky all the best as she continues to pursue her hockey career and academic pursuits at the next level.
