Wildcats Lose on the Road to the Avros

The Westman Wildcats traveled to Winnipeg on Saturday to face the Winnipeg Avros.  The Avros scored a goal in the 1st period and two in the 3rd period (including an empty netter) to shut out the Wildcats 3-0.

Ali O'Hara Commits to Minot State University

The Westman Wildcats would like to extend its congratulations to Ali O’Hara, a 4th year Wildcat from Chater, MB, who has committed to attend school at, and play hockey with, the Minot State University Beavers in the fall of 2019. 

In 25 league games last year Ali had 13 goals, 8 assists for 21 points. Overall, in 53 games last season, Ali scored 21 goals and added 17 assists for 38 points. This season, in 11 league games Ali has 7 goals and 9 assists for 16 points. In 20 games overall this season she has recorded 8 goals and 11 assists for 19 points.  Overall, during her Wildcats career, Ali has played in 195 games and recorded 54 goals and 60 assists for 114 points.

From Coach Miner of the MSU Beavers, “We are very excited to have Ali join our program as we make the transition up to Division 1.  Ali will bring a work ethic that is dominant at both ends of the ice – whether it’s a battle in the corner or contributing to a scoring opportunity.  She is a well-rounded two-way player who will be a key impact for our program next fall.

Minot State University (MSU or MiSU) is a four-year institution of higher learning in Minot, North Dakota. Founded in 1913 as a normal school, Minot State University is the third-largest university in North Dakota, offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs.  Three colleges comprise the university’s academic offerings: Arts and Sciences, Business, and Education and Health Sciences. Nine master's degrees and one education specialist degree are offered in such areas as communication disorders, management, and mathematics. 

 


Wildcats vs Winnipeg Ice

The Westman Wildcats came from behind to defeat the Winnipeg Ice 2-1 in overtime on Sunday afternoon in Hartney. Paige Hubbard scored both goals for the Wildcats and Jillian Szabo stopped 26 of 27 shots to pick up the win in net.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first ten minutes of the game the Westman Wildcats battled back to force overtime before falling 4-3 in a shootout to the Central Plains Capitals in Hartney on Sunday afternoon.

Four powerplay goals and one shorthanded goal was enough to give the Westman Wildcats a 5-2 victory against the Winnipeg Avros on Saturday afternoon. Jodi Hansen-Young had a goal and 3 assists to lead the way. Jillian Szabo picked up the win in net.

Wildcats vs Central Plains

The Wildcats traveled to Portage la Prairie on Friday night to face the Central Plains Capitals. The Wildcats got off to a good start and placed with pace until they got into some penalty trouble late in the period that took away some of their momentum. The Caps would score two goals in the last two and a half minutes to head into the period break up 2-0.  The Wildcats would have to kill off almost a full two minute 5 on 3 penalty to begin the 2nd period before they would mount the comeback with two goal in the 2nd period and two more in the 3rd period off the stick of Gilly Gervin to secure a 4-2 victory. Natalie Williamson picked up the win in net.

Rachel O'Toole signs with University of Regina

The Westman Wildcats would like to extend its congratulations to Rachel O’Toole, a 1st year Wildcat from The Pas, MB, who has committed to attend school at, and play hockey with, the University of Regina Cougars in the fall of 2019.

Rachel played three seasons (2014-2015, 2015-16 and 2016-17) with the Norman Wild in the Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League (MFMHL). In the 2014-2015 season Rachel had 3 assists in 30 league games. In the 2015-16 season she had 2 assists in 28 league games. In the 2016-17 season she had 3 goals and 7 assists in 28 league games. Last season, Rachel played with the Pilot Mound Buffaloes in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL) Female Varsity Division. In 25 league games she amassed 2 goals and 6 assists for 8 points. Overall, in 48 games she had 2 goals and 9 assists for 11 points. This season, with the Wildcats, in 4 league games Rachel has 2 goals and 3 assists for 5 points and, overall, she has recorded 2 goals and 5 assists for 7 points in 8 games.

From Coach Hodges of the Cougars, “We are excited to add Rachel to our group for 2019-20 - she will bring some needed size to our defensive corps and I think her offensive skills and instincts will make her a great Canada West defense woman.  I am excited her to watch her continue to develop over this season with the Wildcats.
