The Westman Wildcats took to the ice at the Art Hauser Arena in Prince Albert on Friday night to play the Prince Albert Northern Bears. The Wildcats got off to an early lead as Ashton Bell sniped a shot off the face off won by Andrea Sanderson to make it 1-0 at the 15:28 mark of the period. The Wildcats almost stretched the lead on the next shift as Sanderson missed just wide on a 2 on 1 chance. The two teams would settle into some back and forth play until Andrea Sanderson scored off the rush on the powerplay at the 5:43 marked, assisted by Jessica Walker and Josee Casavant, to make it 2-0.  Shots on goal in the period were 7-7.  The Bears took the lone minor penalty.

Hannah Petrie scored the OT winner at the 17:57 mark of the 2nd overtime to lift the Pembina Valley Hawks to the MFMHL title.

The Wildcats came out very strong in the opening period and generated numerous high quality scoring opportunities, including a breakaway chance by Ashton Bell that hit the post,  against the Hawks but were unable to their goaltender, Halle Oswald.  Each team had 8 shots on net and each team took 2 minor penalties.

The Wildcats continued to pressure in the 2nd period and were finally rewarded as Ashton Bell scored on a breakaway with a quick snap shot that eluded the Hawks tender. The Wildcats outshot the Hawks 9-4 and the Hawks took 2 of 3 minor penalties.

It was more of the same in the 3rd but Oswald continued to stand tall and make some incredible saves. Makenzie McCallum tied the game up on the powerplay midway through the 3rd period as the Wildcats defender blocked a shot from the point and the puck dropped right on the stick of the Hawks player who buried it into the back of the net.

Final shots on net were 32-20 in favour of Westman. The Hawks took 5 of 9 minors.  Kaitie Slator suffered the loss in net.

The Westman Wildcats travelled to Morden for game two of the League Final on Friday night.  

The Hawks got the early lead at the 17:35 mark of the opening period as a point shot was re-directed on its way to the net and landed on the stick of another Hawk player to the side of the net who promptly deposited it into the open net to make it 1-0.  The Wildcats dominated the remainder of the period, peppering the Hawks goalie with 13 shots, most of them of very high quality, but the Hawk netminder stood tall and preserved the 1 goal lead.  Final shots in the period were 13-5 in favour of Westman.  The Hawks took the lone minor penalty.

The 2nd period was more balanced territorially as the Hawks defended their own net and made it more difficult for the Wildcats to get shots through to the net.  Shots in the period were 6-4 in favour of Pembina Valley with the Wildcats taking the lone minor penalty.

In the 3rd the Wildcats pushed hard to tie the game and were rewarded finally as Aly O'Hara's wrist shot from the slot beat the Hawks netminder at the 13:46 mark.  Cammy Clyne and Paige Hubbard picked up assists on the play. The lead was shortlived, however, as the Hawks scored at 12:18 on another shot that was blocked by a Wildcats player and landed on the stick of another Hawks player who deposited it in the net.  The Wildcats continued to push to tie the game and missed on a breakaway and were turned away a number of times.  Shots on net were 8-5 in favour of Westman.  The Hawks picked up the lone minor of the period.

Final shots on net were 25-16 Westman.  The Hawks took 2 of the 3 minor penalties in the game. 

Jenna Marshall suffered the loss in net.

Game 3 goes Sunday at 2 PM in Hartney.

The Westman Wildcats were defeated 3-0 on home ice Wednesday night in Hartney and trail the best of 5 series 1-0. Two goals over a 4 minute span late in the 2nd period were the difference as the Hawks took a 2-0 lead into the 3rd period. The Wildcats began to push in the 3rd period but couldn't solve the Hawks goaltender. Pembina Valley would seal the victory with an empty netter.

The Wildcats took 2 of 6 minor penalties.  

1st period shots were 11-7 in favour of Westman.  2nd period shots were 13-4 in favour of Pembina Valley.  3rd period shots were 16-11 in favour of Westman.  

Kaitie Slator suffered the loss in net.  

Game 2 in Friday night at 7:45 in Morden.

Josee Casavant scored on the powerplay with 4:10 remaining in the 1st overtime to defeat the Yellowhead Chiefs 2-1 to win the league semi-final series 3 games to 1.  Andrea Sanderson won the draw back to the point and Jessica Walker dragged the puck to the middle and passed it back down the half wall to Sanderson. Sanderson drove the lane and got the shot through to the net.  The Chiefs goalie, Miranda Cook, made the original save but the puck squeaked through and fell behind her.  Josee Casavant was in the right place to see the open puck behind Cook and she slid it into the open net to secure the series victory.

The Wildcats got off to a rough start in the opening period as they struggled to gain any momentum.  The tight checking Chiefs made it difficult at every turn and outshot the Wildcats 15-4.  Tatum Amy scored the opening goal at the 9:21 mark of the period to give the Chiefs a one goal lead.  The Wildcats began to build some momentum in the last 5 minutes of the period but were happy to get out of the period down only one goal.  Each team took 1 minor penalty.

The Wildcats came out a different team in the 2nd period and began to consistently get pucks deep and establish a strong forecheck.  The increased pace caused the Chiefs to take a couple of minor penalties.  The Wildcats capitalized on the first powerplay as Andrea Sanderson popped a rebound past Cook to tie the game.  The Wildcats continued to carry the play and ended up outshooting the Chiefs 11-7 in the frame.  The Chiefs took 2 of 3 minor penalties in the period.  

The Wildcats came out on a mission in the 3rd period, carrying the play to the Chiefs.  This resulted in numerous scoring chances but Cook was equal to the task and turned aside everything the Wildcats threw at them. The Wildcats thought they had the go ahead goal but the referee determined that he blew the whistle before the puck entered the net. The Wildcats goaltender, Jenna Marshall, stayed sharp and was called upon to make a big save with 17 seconds remaining in regulation.  The game was headed for overtime.  The Wildcats outshot the Chiefs 17-8 in the period and the Chiefs took 2 of 3 minor penalties.

In overtime, the Wildcats had to kill off an early penalty but then got a powerplay opportunity of their own and cue the heroics from Casavant.

Jenna Marshall was solid in net picking up the win and stopping 29 of 30 shots.  The Wildcats finished with 32 shots on net.

The Wildcats will now face off against the Pembina Valley Hawks.  Stay tuned for the announcement of when game 1 will be played in Hartney next week.

The Yellowhead Chiefs defeated the Westman Wildcats 3-2 in Hartney this afternoon.  The Chiefs got off to an early lead at the 16:50 mark of the opening period as Cass Lyttle's shot from just inside the blueline deflected off a Wildcats stick and eluded the Wildcats tender.  Westman would fight back to tie it as Ashton Bell finished off a nice feed from Paige Hubbard with 2:40 remaining in the period.  Jessica Walker picked up the other assist.  The Chiefs would restore the lead, however, as Rylee Gluska fired home a rebound that found its way into the net with 1:25 remaining in the period.  Yellowhead outshot the Wildcats 11-7 in the period.

The 2nd period saw a number of penalties called against both sides but it was an even strength goal by the Wildcats that would tie it at 2 with 4:58 remaining in the period as Andrea Sanderson found herself all alone in front of an empty net.  Once again, though, the Chiefs would fight back to take the lead with 2:22 remaining in the period as Cass Lyttle scored her second of the game as she buried a rebound from the slot.  Each team had 9 shots on net and the Chiefs took 5 of 8 minor penalties.  

The two teams would battle it out in the 3rd period but the Wildcats were unable to tie the game.  The Wildcats outshot the Chiefs 8-7 in the period.  Each team took two minor penalties.

Kaitie Slator suffered the loss in net for the Wildcats.  The two teams face off again on Wednesday night in Shoal Lake at 7:30 PM.

The Westman Wildcats took a 2-0 series lead with a 3-1 victory over the Yellowhead Chiefs on Friday night in Shoal Lake.  The Chiefs came out very strong in the opening period at home and had the Wildcats on their heels at times.  The Chiefs would take the lead with 2:26 remaining in the period as Karli Frederick buried a shot from the slot off a 3 on 2 rush to make it 1-0.  The Chiefs outshot the Wildcats 6-2 in the period and the Wildcats took 2 of 3 minor penalties.

In the 2nd, the Wildcats finally began to click as a team and began to push the pace of the game.  They were rewarded as Ashton Bell scored at the 15:09 mark with a high wrist shot off the rush to make it 1-1.   Aly O'Hara and Andrea Sanderson picked up the assists on the play.  The Wildcats continued to push and Bell would score again with another high wrist shot from the slot to make it 2-1.  The Wildcats kept the pressure up, causing the Chiefs to take a couple of penalties, but, despite numerous high quality chances they were unable to stretch the lead.  The Wildcats outshot the Chiefs 16-4 in the period and the Chiefs took both minor penalties.

The 3rd period was a tight checking affair as the Wildcats made the Chiefs fight for every inch on the ice.  The Chiefs came close to scoring on a goal mouth scramble but a Wildcats player swept the puck off the goal line and on the ensuing rush, Paige Hubbard undressed the Chiefs defender and slipped the puck through the 5 hole of the Chiefs tender to make it 3-1 with 11:32 remaining to play.  Ashley Seekings picked up the lone assist on the play.  The Wildcats kept the pressure up but would have to kill off a 4 minute minor late in the game to secure the victory.  Shots in the 3rd period were 5-3 in favour of Westman.  Each team took 2 minor penalties.

Jenna Marshall was solid in net, picking up the victory. Final shots on net were 23-13 for Westman.
