Wildcats Clinch 1st Place
Feb 10, 2019, 6:12 pm

The Westman Wildcats came into the final game of the season versus the Winnipeg Avros with a chance to clinch 1st place in the league standings.  Going into the tilt the Wildcats held a two point lead and needed a minimum tie to clinch.  Aly O'Hara and Paige Hubbard got the Wildcats going on the opening shift with a strong forecheck.  The puck landed on O'Hara's stick and she scored from a tough angle on the goal line only 27 seconds into the game.  The Avros pushed hard for the next 5 minutes but the Wildcats were able to weather the storm.  The play would continue back and forth with each team trading chances until Paige Hubbard would score with 1:56 remaining in the opening frame off another strong forecheck from O'Hara and Rink to make it 2-0.

The 2nd period saw the Avros carry the play through tight forechecking and physical play. They would be rewarded late in the period with a goal off a well-placed shot on the powerplay to make it 2-1.

The 3rd period began with the Wildcats having to kill off an early minor penalty.  They got back to work and kept the game in the neutral zone until a solid forecheck led to a Wildcats insurance marker with 8:49 to play off the stick of Hubbard to make it 3-1. That is how the game would end.  Natalie Williamson picked up the win in net stopping 28 of 29 shots.  The Wildcats clinched 1st place in the league, having held onto that position since the opening game of the season.  They will now face the Interlake Lightning in the opening round of the playoffs.  Game 1 will be Tuesday night at 7:30 PM in Hartney with game 2 in Warren on Saturday at 3:00 PM and game 3 in Hartney on Sunday at 2:00 PM.
