Wildcats defeat Norman 5-4 in Flin Flon
Oct 16, 2016, 7:25 am

The Westman Wildcats made the long journey on Saturday morning to Flin Flon to play the Norman Wild in league action. The Wildcats got on the board early as Tori Williams fired a shot from the point 21 seconds into the game to put the Wildcats up 1-0.  Assists on the goal went to Ashley Seekings and Ashton Bell.  Midway through the period, Bell scored, unassisted, to make the game 2-0.  That would be Bell’s second last shift of the game as she had to head to the hospital to get some needlework completed. The Wildcats were already without Shae Vallotton who is resting a couple of nagging injuries. Just over a minute later, Andrea Sanderson scored, unassisted, to make it 3-0.  Mckenzie Meek popped in another to make it a 4-0 lead.  The quick, substantial lead seemed to put the Wildcats to sleep as they gave up two goals, one on the power play, before the end of the period to make it a 4-2 game.  The Wildcats received both minor penalties in the period and outshot Norman 12-4.

In the 2nd period scored an early marker to make it 4-3 and completed the comeback with a power play goal midway through the period.  The Wildcats continued their trip to the sin bin with 3 more consecutive penalties in the period.  Norman received two minor penalties late in the period.  Shots were 11-8 in favor of Norman.

After a little soul searching between periods, the Wildcats came out and pitched a shutout in the 3rd period, not allowing a single shot on net and firing 12 of their own on the Norman goaltender.  Cammy Clyne eventually scored the game winner with just over 9 minutes remaining in the game to seal the deal for the Wildcats. Unfortunately, the Wildcats lost another player to injury as 1st year forward, Gilly Gervin suffered an upper body injury late in the period and will be off for the foreseeable future.

Jenna Marshall picked up the win in net for the Wildcats.  Final shots on net were 32-15 in favor of Westman.  The Wildcats took 6 penalties to the Wild’s 3 penalties.

The two teams hook up again on Sunday morning in The Pas.

Wildcats Fall 2-1 in OT vs Pembina Valley
Oct 15, 2016, 9:14 am

The Westman Wildcats were defeated 2-1 in overtime by the Pembina Valley Hawks on Friday night in Hartney.

The Hawks were clearly the better team in the opening frame as they outshot the Wildcats 15-5.  Were it not for the superb goaltending of Kaitie Slator the Wildcats would have found themselves in a deep hole.  The period ended scoreless and each team was assessed two minor penalties.

In the 2nd period it was more of the same as the Wildcats really struggled to find their game.  Finally, about midway through the period the team began to skate and take time and space away from their opponent. They were reward with 5 minutes remaining in the period when Ashton Bell buried a pass from behind the net from Paige Hubbard afer a solid forecheck from Aly O'Hara.  The period would end with Westman holding a one goal lead.  Each team was assessed two minor penalties.  Shots were 8-6 in favour of Westman.

The 3rd period was clearly the Wildcats best period but it was the Hawks goaltender's turn to make the big save.  The Wildcats peppered Oswald with numerous quality shots but she was able to turn everything aside.  Midway through the period the Hawks were able to tie the game midway through the 3rd period on a rebound off the post after a Wildcats giveaway.  The Wildcats outshot the Hawks 10-4 in the period.

The Hawks would finish the game off with 1:14 remaining in OT on a partial breakaway.

Final shots on net were 26-24 in favour of the Hawks.

Westman travels to Flin Flon early Saturday morning to face the Norman Wild for two games in Flin Flon and The Pas.

The game had remained scoreless through the opening two periods until Shae Vallotton completed an end to end rush 1:28 into the 3rd period and buried a wrist shot blocker side high.  The Avros tied it up four and a half minutes later as a wrist shot deflected off a Wildcats defender and evaded the Wildcats tender.
