The Westman Wildcats fell 2-1 to the Yellowheadthe Chiefs tonight in Hartney.  The Chiefs stormed out of the gate early with a heavy forecheck and had the Wildcats on their heels for the first few minutes of the game. The game settled in after a few minutes and some end to end play developed. The Wildcats were first to respond as Andrea Sanderson chipped a puck past the Chiefs defenseman and rushed down the ice  on a 2 on 1 and beat the Chiefs tender to make it 1-0.  The Chiefs responded the very next shift as a shot from the point found its way through traffic into the back of the net.  The period would end 1-1. Yellowheadthe outshot the Wildcats 8-6.

In the 2nd period the Chiefs mounted another push and were rewarded as a point shot deflected off a stick and landed right on the tape of an uncovered Chief at the side of the net who promptly deposited it into the open net.  The Wildcats fought back but were stymied on a couple great scoring opportunities.  The period ended 2-1.  The Wildcats outshot thenChiefs 13-12 and the Chiefs took 2 of 3 minor penalties.

Wildcats defeat St. Mary's in Overtime
Nov 20, 2016, 6:13 pm

The Westman Wildcats hosted the St. Mary's Flames this afternoon in Hartney.  The Flames were clearly the better team in the opening frame and scored the 1st period's only goal. It was clear that the Wildcats were suffering from a little rust as they had not played for two weeks.  The Flames outshot the Wildcats 8-3 in the frame.  St. Mary's took the lone minor of the period.

The Flames struck on the opening shift of the 2nd period to make it a 2 goal lead and continued to carry the play for much of the first half of the period.  Shots in the period were 14-3 for St. Mary's and the Wildcats took 2 of 3 minor penalties.

The Wildcats finally found their legs in the final frame and began to push back.  Eventually, their hard work led to a powerplay and Ashton Bell was able to score off the rush with 12:31 remaining in the period to make the game 2-1.  Haley Wickham and Mckenzie Meek each picked up assists on the play. That goal seemed to put the Flames on their heels a bit and the Wildcats really made a push . But is was a huge save by Jenna Marshall that kept the Wildcats alive and they responded with a couple really intense shifts and were once again rewarded with a powerplay.  This time it was Tori Williams who buried a rebound to tie the game at 2-2 with 4:05 remaining in the 3rd.  Josee Casavant and Aly O'Hara each picked up an assist on the play.  The Wildcats outshot the Flames 10-2 in the period.  The Flames took 3 of 4 penalties in the frame.

The two teams would head to overtime where Ashton Bell would take the puck from the faceoff and bury the winner.

The Wildcats next play this Wednesday at home vs the Yellowhead Chiefs.  Game time is 7:30 PM.
