Westman Wildcats lose to University of Saskatchewan Huskies in OT

The Westman Wildcats regional female midget hockey team travelled to Lampman on Saturday to participate in Hockey Saskatchewan's “Hockey Day in Saskatchewan”.

Their game with the number nine ranked CIS University of Saskatchewan Huskies topped of a day in Lampman that had seen two other All-Star Games.

Both Saskatchewan AAA Midget males and female leagues had played their annual classics prior to this feature contest.

This game proved to be the highlight game of the day with both teams putting on a great show for the capacity crowd gathered to watch.

The first period had lots of action but neither team could dent the twine and going into the second the score remained knotted at goose eggs.

The Huskies got on the score sheet first going up by one early in the second.

The “Cats” responded by potting two in the middle frame to go into the break up 2-1.

The first goal was scored by Oak Lake's Meg Bailey with assists going to Souris's Laura Williams and Virden's Kayleigh Chapman. The second marker was scored by Wawanesa native JD Durnin, from Brandon's Amy Lee and Lauder's Brit Phillips.

The Huskies pressed hard in the third and tied up the game forcing OT.

In Overtime the Huskies managed to score the winner on a power play marker.

“Cat Paws” for the game. The Wildcats played very short staffed with a rash of injuries shortening the bench, with only 12 skaters dressing to play. Souris native Darby Peaslee stopped 43 of 46 shots sent her way, while the Cats fired 37 at the Huskies goalies. The Wildcats took 5 of 9 minors. The Wildcats next action is Saturday and Sunday in Wawanesa against the Balmoral Hall Blazers.

Canada 2 - United States 3 (Final in Overtime)

CANADA TAKES SILVER AFTER OT LOSS TO AMERICANS

FÃœSSEN, GERMANY -For the second year in a row, Canada will bring home silver from the IIHF World Women's Under-18 Championship.

Jessica Wong (Baddeck, NS/Stoney Creek, PWHL) scored the game-tying goal with less than eight minutes to go to force overtime, but the United States took advantage of a power play in the extra period to score a 3-2 win in Saturday's gold medal game.

The U.S. also won gold in 2008, defeating Canada 5-2 in Calgary, AB.

After back-and-forth action for much of the opening period it was the Americans who hit the board first, as Brooke Ammerman snapped a shot past the blocker of Canadian netminder Roxanne Douville (Beloeil, QC/Edouard-Montpetit, Collégial AA) to send the U.S. to the dressing room up one.

The lead doubled early in the second thank to Taylor Wasylk, who pushed a loose puck past Douville just moments after Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, ON/Ottawa, PWHL) had failed to convert on a breakaway.

Canada turned up the offence in the second period, outhooting the Americans 18-9, but it took until the 18:35 mark of the frame for the Canadians to finally hit the scoreboard -Melodie Daoust (Valleyfield, QC/Sélects, Midget AA) chipped the puck over U.S. goaltender Alex Rigsby after a wild scramble in front.

With the lead now at just one Canada kept up the momentum in the third period, and was rewarded when Wong went to the net to convert on the rebound of a Kaleigh Fratkin (Burnaby, BC/Detroit Little Caesars, Midget AAA) shot, completing the comeback and giving the Canadians new life.

Jillian Saulnier (Halifax, NS/Stoney Creek, PWHL) had the best chance to win it in the dying minutes, but could not bury the puck on a late breakaway, sending the game to overtime.

After being outshot 38-25 in regulation time the Americans held a 7-2 advantage in the extra frame, and Kendall Coyne finished it with her tournament-leading eighth goal of the tournament 6:47 into overtime.

Daoust, Wong and Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, QC/Dawson College, Collégial AA) finished as Canada's top scorers, tying for third in tournament scoring with 12 points apiece. Saige Pacholok (Edmonton, AB/Edmonton, WWHL) finished tied for the lead in scoring among defencemen with eight points.

FUSSEN, Germany - Canada locked up a semifinal berth at the women's world under-18 hockey championship by whipping the Czech Republic 13-0 on Wednesday.

Brittany Phillips of Lauder, Man., scored a hat trick to help the Canadians clinch first place in Group B with their third straight victory.

Marie-Philip Poulin of Beauceville, Que., Laurie Kingsbury of Valleyfield, Que.,  and Brianne Jenner of Oakville, Ont., scored two goals apiece. Brigette Lacquette of Mallard, Man., Kaleigh Fratkin of Burnaby, B.C., Melodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., and Jessica Campbell of Melville, Sask., added singles.

Canada, who will next play Sweden on Friday, has outscored the opposition 35-1 over three preliminary-round games. Head coach Stephanie White said her goal is to keep the players focused despite the lopsided results.

''We have been working on a lot of the details of the game,'' she said. ''So even some of the games that have had higher scores, we're challenging them every period to continue to improve.

''We're putting very specific tactics or game plans in place and making sure that we're keeping honest and still playing smart hockey.''

Lacquette found the back of the net just 17 seconds into the game, one of three goals in the opening frame. Canada added four more in the second before pouring it on the third.

''We had production spread across our lines,'' White said. ''A little bit of a slow start but we certainly got going through the second period and had a strong finish in the third.''

Saige Pacholok of Edmonton and Jessica Wong of Baddeck, N.S., had four assists apiece. Roxanne Douville of Beloeil, Que., made nine saves for the shutout.

Canada opened the tournament Monday with a 16-1 rout of Switzerland and followed with a 6-0 victory over Finland a day later.

''We're getting goals from various people and it's being spread out,'' Smith said. ''But I also like the fact of how we're scoring the goals. It's not individual efforts, it's moving the puck, driving to the net and just putting quality shots on net and finding rebounds.''

Czech goaltender Monika Pencikova made 43 saves before being pulled early in the third period. She was replaced by Karolina Simunkova, who stopped 19 shots.

In Wednesday's other games, the defending champion Americans hammered Sweden 9-2, Switzerland edged Finland 4-3 and Russia beat Germany 5-2.

Kendall Coyne scored four goals to lead the U.S., who finished in top spot in Pool A with three wins and will play the Czechs in Friday's other semifinal. The medal games are scheduled for Saturday.

Canada claimed silver at the inaugural world women's under-18 hockey championship in Calgary last year.

OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION LEADS CANADA TO SEMIFINALS

FÃœSSEN, GERMANY -It's off to the semifinals for Canada's National Women's Under-18 Team.

Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, QC/Dawson College, Collégial AA), Saige Pacholok (Edmonton, AB/Edmonton, WWHL) and Jessica Wong (Baddeck, NS/Stoney Creek, PWHL) finished with four points apiece as Canada wrapped up first place in Group B with a 13-0 win over the Czech Republic on Wednesday.

Canada finished with a perfect 3-0 record in preliminary round play, outscoring the opposition 35-1. It will face either the United States or Sweden in Friday's semifinals -the Americans and Swedes play later Wednesday to decide first and second place in Group A.

It took just 17 seconds for Canada to hit the board first, as Brigette Lacquette (Mallard, MB/Westman, Midget AA) snapped a shot from the point that found its way over the shoulder of Czech netminder Monika Pencikova for a quick 1-0 lead.

After Brittany Phillips (Lauder, MB/Westman, Midget AA) had made it 2-0 just past the midway point of the period, Brianne Jenner (Oakville, ON/Mississauga, CWHL) took the puck end-to-end for an unassisted marker just 74 seconds later, sending Canada to the dressing room up three goals.

Canada outshot the Czechs 22-2 in the first period and continued the offensive onslaught early in the second period, as Jenner and Phillips each added their second of the game before the period was half over.

Poulin made it a half-dozen Canadian goals, scoring as she was falling down, and Kaleigh Fratkin (Burnaby, BC/Detroit Little Caesars, Midget AAA) registered her first goal of the tournament, shorthanded, to make it 7-0 after two periods.

With the game well in hand, Poulin added her second of the game, Phillips finished her hat trick, Laurie Kingsbury (Valleyfield, QC/Sélects, Midget AA) scored twice and Melodie Daoust (Valleyfield, QC/Sélects, Midget AA) and Jessica Campbell (Melville, SK/Pursuit of Excellence) added goals of their own -all in the third period -as Canada scored six times in the final frame.

Roxanne Douville (Beloeil, QC/Edouard-Montpetit, Collégial AA) picked up her second win of the tournament, turning aside nine shots to record her first shutout.

Eleven players finished with multiple-point games, led by Poulin (two goals, two assists), Pacholok (four assists) and Wong (four assists). Wong and Poulin co-lead the team in scoring through the prelims, with nine points each.
