Westman Wildcats lose to University of Saskatchewan Huskies in OT
The Westman Wildcats regional female midget hockey team travelled to Lampman on Saturday to participate in Hockey Saskatchewan's “Hockey Day in Saskatchewanâ€.
Their game with the number nine ranked CIS University of Saskatchewan Huskies topped of a day in Lampman that had seen two other All-Star Games.
Both Saskatchewan AAA Midget males and female leagues had played their annual classics prior to this feature contest.
This game proved to be the highlight game of the day with both teams putting on a great show for the capacity crowd gathered to watch.
The first period had lots of action but neither team could dent the twine and going into the second the score remained knotted at goose eggs.
The Huskies got on the score sheet first going up by one early in the second.
The “Cats†responded by potting two in the middle frame to go into the break up 2-1.
The first goal was scored by Oak Lake's Meg Bailey with assists going to Souris's Laura Williams and Virden's Kayleigh Chapman. The second marker was scored by Wawanesa native JD Durnin, from Brandon's Amy Lee and Lauder's Brit Phillips.
The Huskies pressed hard in the third and tied up the game forcing OT.
In Overtime the Huskies managed to score the winner on a power play marker.
“Cat Paws†for the game. The Wildcats played very short staffed with a rash of injuries shortening the bench, with only 12 skaters dressing to play. Souris native Darby Peaslee stopped 43 of 46 shots sent her way, while the Cats fired 37 at the Huskies goalies. The Wildcats took 5 of 9 minors. The Wildcats next action is Saturday and Sunday in Wawanesa against the Balmoral Hall Blazers.

Jan 8, 2009, 7:05 am FUSSEN, Germany - Canada locked up a semifinal berth at the women's world under-18 hockey championship by whipping the Czech Republic 13-0 on Wednesday. Brittany Phillips of Lauder, Man., scored a hat trick to help the Canadians clinch first place in Group B with their third straight victory. Marie-Philip Poulin of Beauceville, Que., Laurie Kingsbury of Valleyfield, Que., and Brianne Jenner of Oakville, Ont., scored two goals apiece. Brigette Lacquette of Mallard, Man., Kaleigh Fratkin of Burnaby, B.C., Melodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., and Jessica Campbell of Melville, Sask., added singles. Canada, who will next play Sweden on Friday, has outscored the opposition 35-1 over three preliminary-round games. Head coach Stephanie White said her goal is to keep the players focused despite the lopsided results. ''We have been working on a lot of the details of the game,'' she said. ''So even some of the games that have had higher scores, we're challenging them every period to continue to improve. ''We're putting very specific tactics or game plans in place and making sure that we're keeping honest and still playing smart hockey.'' Lacquette found the back of the net just 17 seconds into the game, one of three goals in the opening frame. Canada added four more in the second before pouring it on the third. ''We had production spread across our lines,'' White said. ''A little bit of a slow start but we certainly got going through the second period and had a strong finish in the third.'' Saige Pacholok of Edmonton and Jessica Wong of Baddeck, N.S., had four assists apiece. Roxanne Douville of Beloeil, Que., made nine saves for the shutout. Canada opened the tournament Monday with a 16-1 rout of Switzerland and followed with a 6-0 victory over Finland a day later. ''We're getting goals from various people and it's being spread out,'' Smith said. ''But I also like the fact of how we're scoring the goals. It's not individual efforts, it's moving the puck, driving to the net and just putting quality shots on net and finding rebounds.'' Czech goaltender Monika Pencikova made 43 saves before being pulled early in the third period. She was replaced by Karolina Simunkova, who stopped 19 shots. In Wednesday's other games, the defending champion Americans hammered Sweden 9-2, Switzerland edged Finland 4-3 and Russia beat Germany 5-2. Kendall Coyne scored four goals to lead the U.S., who finished in top spot in Pool A with three wins and will play the Czechs in Friday's other semifinal. The medal games are scheduled for Saturday.
