Wildcats vs Avros at Central Plains Showcase in Portage
Sep 29, 2013, 8:04 am

The Westman Wildcats stepped on to the ice to face the Winnipeg Avros for the second time this season. The Wildcats were looking to avenge a 4-1 loss at Swift Current.

The Wildcats came out and established their presence early with a strong forecheck that resulted in an unassisted early goal off the stick of Jaycee Magwood. The Avros responded later in the frame and both teams entered the intermission tied 1-1.

The intensity level picked up even more in the second period with a lot of physical play. This time though it was the Avros who caught the Wildcats napping early as they were able to score on the 1st shift of the period. Both teams pushed hard throughout the period with the Avros stretching their lead to 3-1 before Jenna Patterson was able to bring the Wildcats within a goal before the end of the 2nd period. Jaycee Magwood and Mackenzie Roach picked up the assists.

The 3rd period saw more of the same energy and emotion. The Avros stretched their lead out to 4-2 early in the 3rd and began to plug up the middle of the ice. Half way through the period the Wildcats found a completely different gear and began to push back aggressively. Their intensity on the puck and strong cycle led to a powerplay chance with 7:30 left in the period. KJ Wallace drove the net off the faceoff and buried a heavy shot from the slot to pull Westman within 1 goal. Jaedon Cooke picked up the lone assist. The Wildcats continued to press and hemmed the Avros in their own end each shift. Westman's aggression led to a penalty with just under 4 minutes to play that they would kill off. The Wildcats put on a final push in the remaining 2 minutes and pulled their goalie for the extra attacker. Their high energy and intensity paid off as Ashton Bell snapped home a rebound shot from the slot to tie the game with 30 seconds remaining.

Sky Brown stopped 18 of 22 shots she faced. The Wildcats fired 28 shots on the Avros goal.
