Congratulations to Gina Williams from Souris who has committed to attend school at, and play hockey with, the University of Calgary Dinos. Gina is a 4th year Wildcat and will be attending the University of Calgary in the fall of 2014. She will be pursuing a Kinesiology degree. Gina, a co-captain with the Wildcats, is a stalwart on defense and a model of character, discipline, and work ethic for her teammates. In 50 games so far this year she has 5 goals, 19 assists for 24 points overall. She is a +8 and has 42 penalty minutes. Gina was an integral part of the Wildcats championship run at the annual Mac’s tournament in Calgary over Christmas break this year. The University of Calgary is a member of the Canada West Conference of the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport). The University of Calgary is public research university located in Calgary, Alberta. It is composed of 14 faculties and more than 85 research institutes and centres. More than 25,000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate students are currently enrolled. PLAYER OF THE WEEK UPDATES Week 14 ending January 19, 2014 - Jaycee Magwood - Forward - Westman Wildcats Jan 19, 2014, 1:54 pm The Wildcats traveled to Winnipeg on Saturday to face the Winnipeg Avros. The 1st period was a tight checking affair as both teams battled back and forth to gain momentum. Most of the period was played in the neutral zone and no goals were scored. Shots on goal were 4 apiece. In the 2nd period the Wildcats began to establish their forecheck on a consistent basis. They were rewarded with a powerplay goal off a deflection from Kenzie Robinson, assisted by Missy Hunt. The period ended 1-0 and the shots on goal were 10-9 in favour of the Avros. In the 3rd period the Wildcats continued to impose their will, sensing the opportunity for a big road win. Again, it was Kenzie Robinson who buried the puck on a partial breakaway to make it 2-0. KJ Wallace and Jaedon Cooke picked up the assists. Later, Missy Hunt scored a beauty on an end to end rush to push the lead to 3-0. Keisha Robertson picked up the lone assist. The Avros scored a goal with 30 seconds remaining with their goalie pulled to break the shutout. Shots on goal for the 3rd period were 10-5 in favour of the Wildcats. Final score 3-1 for Westman. Shots on net were 23-19 in favour of Westman. Sky Brown picked up the victory. The Wildcats play a home and home this Friday (Deloraine - 8:30 PM) and Saturday St. Adolfe - 8:00 PM). They will stay in Winnipeg to face Shaftesbury on Sunday morning. Jan 18, 2014, 9:03 am The Wildcats hosted the Eastman Selects last night in Hartney in MFMHL action. Eastman got on the scoreboard first, scoring on a deflection at the conclusion of a powerplay. The Wildcats tied the game on a powerplay goal from Gina Williams, assisted by Jaycee Magwood. Unfortunately, Eastman restored their one goal lead on the powerplay with only 15 seconds remaining. The period ended 2-1 Eastman. Shots on goal were 9-3 in favour of Westman. In the 2nd period Eastman pushed the tempo in the first five minutes but another powerplay goal by Gina Williams, assisted by Megan Robertson and Jaycee Magwood, tied the game at 2-2. The Wildcats took over from there, scoring two more goals before the end of the period to take a 4-2 lead. The first came off a wrist shot goal from Lexie Kalynuk, assisted by Courtney Ganske. The second goal of the period and the fourth of the game was scored by Courtney Ganske on the powerplay, assisted by KJ Wallace and Jaedon Cooke. Shots on goal in the 2nd period were 14-6 in favour of Westman. In the 3rd period it was more of the same as Jaycee Magwood scored on the first shift in the period, assisted by Megan Robertson and Ashton Bell. Magwood scored again to make it 6-2, assisted by Ashton a Bell and Megan Robertson. Eastman scored to make it 6-3 but Ashton Bell restored the four goal lead, assisted by Amie Hunt. Shots on goal in the 3rd were 9-6 in favour of a Westman. Final score, 7-3 for Westman. Final shots were 32-15 in favour of Westman. Sky Brown picked up the win. Brandi played with the Westman Wildcats from 2007 to 2010 and is in her Senior Year with the Robert Morris Colonials who are currently ranked at No. 8 in both the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) and USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine polls..The Westman Wildcats would like to congratulate Brandi on her nomination to this prestigous award Eighteen players nominated for 2014 Hockey Humanitarian Award Eighteen players, including repeat honorees Jordan Heywood of Merrimack and Jeffrey Reppucci of Holy Cross, have been named as nominees for the 2014 Hockey Humanitarian Award. The award, in its 19th year, recognizes college hockey’s finest citizen and includes players from Divisions I, II and III and both genders. Finalists will be announced in February, and the 2014 recipient will be named at the Frozen Four in Philadelphia on Friday, April 11. The nominees cover nine conferences: • In Division I men, Atlantic Hockey, ECAC Hockey, Hockey East and the NCHC. • In Division III women, the CHA, ECAC Hockey and Hockey East. • In Division III men, the MIAC. • And in Division III women, the NESCAC.
