Westman Wildcat's Brittany Phillips Named to Team Canada
Brittany Phillips of Lauder, Mb was named to Hockey Canada'a U18 National Team ..
Hockey Canada announced on Friday the 22-player roster for Canada's National Women's Under-18 Team. The team is made up of the top Canadian female hockey players born in 1991 or later, and will gather for a three-game series against the USA's Women's Under-18 Select Team from August 20-23 in Lake Placid, New York.
The players were selected to the roster following a national conditioning camp in May and an evaluation camp in July, both held in Calgary. They were also evaluated over the course of the 2007-08 season by Hockey Canada's regional scouts, based on their performances at national camps, the 2007 National Women's Under-18 Championship and with their club teams. Both goaltenders also took part in a National Women's Program goaltending camp in June.
“The selection camp we held in Calgary showed us the depth that women's hockey has in Canada,†says Julie Healy, director of female hockey for Hockey Canada. “We are excited about the 22 players we have chosen, and are confident they will represent Canada well in Lake Placid.â€
Canada's National Women's Summer Under-18 Team includes two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards. Eighteen of the 22 players participated in the 2008 National Women's Under-18 Championship in Kitchener, ON, including four members of Team Ontario Red, which captured its fourth consecutive gold medal. Aside from games against Team Japan during the evaluation camp, only six of the players have any previous international experience.
The 2008-09 season for Canada's National Women's Under-18 Team will include the three-game series against the USA in Lake Placid, NY from August 20-23, as well as the 2009 IIHF World Women's Under-18 Championship from January 5-10 in Füssen, Germany.

The Westman Wildcat Camp begins Friday night at the Brandon Sportsplex with 23 players vying for spots on this year's Regional AAA female midget hockey team. The camp runs the full weekend at the Sportsplex and concludes Sunday with the 2008-2009 teams being selected. The Cats graduated seven players from last year squad. Fourteen new players will be competing with the nine returning players to fill out the roster. The Wildcats Season begins September 2nd and will see the team compete in many of North America's largest Female tournaments as well as in the newly formed Manitoba Midget Female League against the other regions in the Province. The Cats have a proud history of player success with 10 current or former players having competed for Team Manitoba at the Nationals over the last five years as well as 12 former players continuing their hockey at Canadian and US colleges. Westman Wildcat Camp Registrations Coming In
The Westman Wildcats Female Midget Hockey Team tryout camp registrations are coming in good numbers.
The camp will run August 8-10 at the Sportsplex in Brandon and the 2008-2009 team will be picked from this camp.
The camp begins Friday August 8th at 7:00pm with an on ice session. Saturday the 9th will see the players do two on ice sessions with one at 1:00pm and a second on ice at 6:00pm. Saturday will also see a player/parent meeting at 5:00pm.
Sunday will conclude the camp with a final on ice session fromm1:00pm-3:00pm.
The team will be announced following the final ice session with the inaugural team event following this announcement.
The Season will begin on September 2nd and a schedule can be found on the web site under calendar. This schedule is only for tournaments and practices as league games and many exhibition series are still being planned.
At the tryouts players will be evaluated by an independent selection committee and selected from these evaluations. Players are encouraged to fill out the on line application to get themselves enrolled for this weekend.

Four Wildcats Continue Quest for Spot on Team Manitoba
Four Westman Wildcat Midget Female hockey players have advanced on to the next round of try outs for Team Manitoba U18 female hockey team.
Brittany Phillips from Lauder, Amy Lee from Brandon, Sarah Williams from Souris and Brandi Pollock from Virden are four of the 26 remaining girls vying for one of the 20 spots on team Manitoba to be able to play in the U18 Canadian Nationals in Nappanee ON in November.
These four athletes will attend the final camp from August 15-17th in Dauphin where the final roster will be selected. The team will play in the University of Manitoba Bison's Fall Classic as a warm up tournament before the Nationals.

Phillips Invited To U-18 Selection Camp
Lauder product Brittany Phillips has moved one step closer to cracking Canada's under-18 women's hockey team.
Players attending the camp are eligible to represent Canada at the 2009 IIHF World Women's Under-18 Championship from January 5th to 10th, 2009 in Füssen, Germany. Jun 11, 2008, 4:40 am
Westman Wildcat Camp Set For August 8-10
The Westman Wildcats tryout camp has been set for August 8th-10th in Brandon. The camp will open Friday night with a player/parent meeting and will be followed by an on ice session. Saturday will have two on ice sessions. Sunday will have the final ice time with the naming of the 2008-2009 Westman Wildcat team.
The on ice session will be composed of drills and intra squad games. The players will be evaluated by independent selectors. The team will be announced Sunday following the final ice session.
All 1993-92-91 female players registered in the Westman region last season have been sent the initial letter announcing date and times of the camp. A second letter will be sent out in July reminding all players along with further registration information.
The Westman Wildcat season begins September 2nd. Through the month of September the team will be doing dry land twice a week and have one on ice session per week. The team will have a weekend retreat September 11th-14th. Starting in October the program will skate three times a week.

Pollock and Minshull Two Former Wildcats Commit To Colleges
Two former Westman Wildcat Female hockey players have been announced by their respective colleges that they were recruited by.
Kristi-Lyn Pollock of Virden has signed with the Colgate Raiders in Hamilton, New York. Colgate is a NCAA DI school that plays in the ECAC league
Pollock has played the last two years for Balmoral Hall in Winnipeg where she was an assistant captain. She was also a two time member of Team Manitoba U18 winning silver at the Canada Games in Whitehorse as well as a bronze medal at the U18 National Championships in Kitchener last November.
Prior to playing with Balmoral Hall Pollock played two seasons with the Westman Wildcats.
Nellie Minshull of Pierson has signed with the University of Manitoba Bisons that compete in Canada West of the CIS.
Minshull also played the last two years for Balmoral Hall and was a two time member of Team Manitoba winning two medals at Whitehorse and Kitchener. Prior to Balmoral Hall Minshull played for the Pierson Female Midget team while APing to the Westman Wildcats.
Pollock and Minshull both will graduate this month and head out to their respective programs in late August to start their college careers this fall.

Five players off the Westman Wildcats Female Midget Hockey Team have moved on in tryouts to this Junes Top 40 in Brandon for Team Manitoba. 136 of Manitoba's top female bantam and Midget aged players attended the POE camp in Winnipeg in late April vying for the opportunity to play for Team Manitoba this November in Canada's National U18 Championships in Napanee Ontario. Hockey Manitoba has selected 40 of these athletes to move on to the next camp in Brandon June 20-22. Team Manitoba have selected 24 forwards, 12 defence and 4 goalies to compete at Brandon . The Westman Wildcats have 5 players that have moved on to this point. On forward, two members of last years Bronze medal winning Team Manitoba U18 team, Brittany Phillips and Amy Lee will be joined by Jenna Marie Durnin. Phillips, from Lauder, has just returned from Team Canada U18 camp will be expected to be a leader on this years squad. Lee, from Brandon, will be working hard to move up the depth chart and use her experience from last years team to help this years team. Durnin, from Wawanesa, is hoping to be one of the 15 forwards moving on to the next camp. Sarah Williams will join Brandi Pollock from last years team Manitoba, on defence. Pollock, from Virden, will be trying to solidify a spot on the backend of this squad. Williams, from Souris, is making her first run at Top 40 and is in good position to be a top 8 defenseman moving on to the next camp. Following the Top 40 camp in Brandon, 26 of these players will move on to a camp in Dauphin from August 15-17 before the final team of 20 is announced. |
