Westman's Williams &Vanbuskirk Sign with SAIT & Lethbridge

 

 

 

Westman Wildcats  Midget Female hockey team is proud to announce the signing of their two captains for the 2008-2009 year.

 

Seniors Amanda Williams and Amy Vanbuskirk with both be packing their hockey bags and going west to continue their education and hockey careers this fall.

 

Senior Amy Vanbuskirk from Brandon has signed with the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns who plays in Canada West of the CIS.

 

Vanbuskirk a senior in Crocus Plains, will be patrolling the blueline for the Pronghorns for the next 5 seasons and is going to add a steadying, mature influence to their program.

 

Williams, a grade 12 student at the Souris High School will be suiting up with the SAIT Trojans in Calgary of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.

 

Williams, a defenseman from Souris, will be joining fellow Westman product Jordan Lonsberry of Virden who joined the Trojans last season.

 

Both Williams and Vanbuskirk were captains on this years Wildcats squad and have garnered a lot of attention from different schools throughout the year so it is understandable that both of these Alberta schools are excited to land these two standout defensemen to their respective programs.

 

It is also an exciting opportunity for both of these athletes to be able to continue their education as well as being able to play a varsity sport at these institutions.

Westman Blue/White Games Huge Success

 

The Westman Wildcats and the Westman Bantam Challenge teams competed in a series of intersquad scrimmages that can only be summed up by being called a huge success.

 

With both teams getting ready for big tournaments next weekend these game situations helped to prepare both teams.

 

On Tuesday night Team Blue was able to edge Team White an offensive game by a 6-4 score. Wednesday saw a more defensive game with Team White turning the tables and recording a 3-2 win to even the series.

 

The Wildcats are preparing to play in the Annual Balmoral Hall Tournament in Winnipeg while the Bantams are getting ready for the Bantam Challenge in The Pas.

Wildcats to Host Regional Blue White Scrimmage

 

Hartney will be the host for the Blue White scrimmages to be held Tuesday April 1st and Wednesday April 2nd for the Westman Bantam Challenge players and the Westman Wildcats.

 

The two teams will be split up for a pair of scrimmages each evening. This will give the Wildcats some much-needed game practice while the Bantams will have the opportunity to challenge themselves at the next level.

 

The Bantam Challenge team is preparing for their Provincial Bantam Challenge tournament in The Pas while the Wildcats are preparing for the Balmoral Hall Tournament in Winnipeg. Both of these events are on April 11-13

Wildcats Sweep Yellowhead and Pembina Valley

 

 

The Westman Wildcats Female Midget  team swept an exhibition series with host Yellowhead Chiefs and the Pembina Valley Hawks on the weekend.

 

The Wildcats first action was against the host Yellowhead Chiefs. The Cats came out quickly and scored three first period goals without giving one up to go into the break 3-0.

 

In the second the Westman squad cranked up the offense potting 5 more while allowing Yellowhead their only marker of the game.

 

The third period saw the Wildcats score the only goal of the period to take the win 9-1.

 

The Cats fired 47 shots at the Yellowhead net while the goaltending dual of Kim Jory and Lacey Adams stopped 25 shots fired their way.

 

The Wildcats had their scoring spread around with 8 different players finding the back of the net.

 

The Cats next action had them facing off against the Pembina Valley Hawks.

 

The wildcats scored the only two goals of the first while applying enormous pressure on the Hawks goalie peppering her with 28 first period shots.

 

The Westman team found the back of the net 3 times in the second while giving up a marker to the Hawks, for a second period break of 5-1 Cats.

 

In the third the wildcats outscored their opponent 2-1 to have a final score of 7-2. . Brit Philips led the Wildcats in scoring this game getting the hat trick.

 

The Cats out shot the Hawks 57-19 in the game and took 6 of the 11 minors called.

Wildcats to Play Series in Yellowhead

The Westman Wildcats will play a two game Series with Yellowhead and Pembina Valley this weekend.
 
Hamiota will host these three regional teams in a round robin series.
 
Westmans first action is against their northern rivals, Yellowhead at 10:00 Saturday. The Cats will than face off against Pembina Valley at 12:30.

Cats Capture Bronze At Provincials

The Westman Wildcats fell short of their goal to win Provincials and represent Manitoba at the Western Canadians this last weekend.
 
The team had to settle for a Bronze and look forward to the rest of the games this season while getting ready to build for next year.
