WESTMAN WILDCATS FIRST OF FOUR LEAGUE MATCHUPS WITH PEMBINA VALLEY HAWKS

The snow just kept on coming down Friday, making poor driving conditions and the radio announcing Westman cancellations for the evening, but at the Hartney Community Arena it was GAME ON with the Wildcats playing the Hawks.
The Cats injured players; Karissa Kirkup, Jessica Vallotton both back after missing 12 games and Kjierstin Wallace back after missing 10 games. Courtney Ganske still missing from the roster, on the injured list. The game was fast and played tight. The shots on goal were Wildcats 34 and Hawks 24. Game penalties handed out totalled five for each team. The Cats forward lines were pressing all game, at the other end of the ice Kristen Campbell keeping the Hawks leading scorer off the scoreboard more than one. The First Period at just under the 10 minute mark , the Cats were handed their first penalty. Less than a minute later, another Cat penalty resulting in the Hawks having a 5 on 3 powerplay. The Hawks with a slap shot from the centre of the blue line which got a deflection past the screened Cats goalie to get one on the scoreboard. The Second Period, the Cats outshot the Hawks 15-5. The Third Period, it was the Cats pushing still for the equalizer and getting some rebounds off the Hawks goalie. Final score: Wildcats 0  Hawks 1  


Wildcats in Winnipeg for MFMHL game Saturday, October 27th 2012

WILDCATS HARD FOUGHT GAME WITH AVROS

Saturday the Wildcats were at the Keith Bodley Arena in Winnipeg for a league game with the Winnipeg Avros, game time was 4:45pm.  This was the first league matchup for the two teams.
The Wildcats were missing four players on their roster; Karissa Kirkup, Jessica Vallotton, Kjiersten Wallace and Courtney Ganske.
This game saw a high level of intensity from both teams. The Cats, it was a well played game; all Forward lines pressing and contributing with shots on goal and Defence playing a solid game. The Wildcats were handed 6 penalties (four in the first period and two in the second). The Cats had well fought penality kills. Kristen Campbell played strong between the pipes for the game.
At the end of the First Period it was a 0-0 game. The Second Period saw the Avros score two goals on the powerplay. With both teams playing at equal strength, it was the Cats forward Samantha Dyck who picked off the puck from the Avros defence by the blue line and skated on a breakaway to score. The Third Period saw the Cats not playing shorthanded and pressing for the equalizer, outshooting the Avros 14-7.

The Wildcats play next weekend at home; Friday Nov. 2nd vs. Pembina Valley Hawks, Saturday Nov. 3rd vs. Winnipeg Avros and Sunday Nov. 4th vs. Winnipeg Ice.

WILDCATS WIN TWO MORE AT HOME

MANITOBA FEMALE MIDGET HOCKEY LEAGUE RECORD NOW  4-1-1

The Wildcats were at home for two MFMHL games on the weekend, the doubleheader Friday, October 19th and Saturday, October 20th was against the Norman Wild. The Wildcats were missing four players on their roster; Courtney Ganske, Kjierstin Wallace, Karissa Kirkup and Jessica Vallotton.
IN BOTH THESE GAMES, THE WILDCATS OUTSHOT THEIR OPPOSiTION AND THE WEEKEND SCOREBOARD TOTALLING 12 GOALS WAS THE CONTRIBUTION FROM TEN DIFFERENT PLAYERS.

FRIDAY GAME:
WESTMAN WILDCATS  5    NORMAN WILD  4
The game winning goal came from Megan Robertson at 12:15 in the third, after getting her own rebound in front of the Wild goalie with a pass from Ashleigh Brykaliuk.
In the First period; Melissa Hunt got the Cats first goal with an assist going to Megan Robertson. Jaycee Magwood got the the next goal with help from Samantha Dyck and Keisha Robertson. Before the period ended Ashleigh Brykaliuk scored asisted by Gina Williams and Jossa Danis. The Wildcat goal in the Second period came from Amanda Coey, assisted by Samantha Dyck. Before the period ended, goalie Amber Tilbury standing tall on a Wild breakaway, her quick response to hold the puck denied them to score. The Third period, Tilbury held the Wild off the scoreboard.

The First period, it was five mintues into the game when Amanda Coey put the first Cats goal past the Wild goalie with help from Samantha Dyck. The period saw two more Wildcat goals, one coming from Ashleigh Brykaliuk with an assist from Melissa Hunt, and it was Kaitlyn Whaley's quick timing that got the next one with a pass from Megan Robertson. Shortly after the puck dropped for the Second period, it was Samantha Dyck finding the back of the net with a pass from Jaycee Magwood. A few minutes later Karissa Haney scored with assists going to Teagan Pringle and Ashleigh Brykaliuk. Before the period ended Brykaliuk scored unassisted. Midway through the Third period, Teagan Pringle added to the scoreboard with assists from Jossa Danis and Kaitlyn Whaley. Goalie Amber Tilbury playing solid in net.

Westman Wildcats play second home game on Wednesday, October 17th 2012

WILDCATS BLANK YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The Westman Wildcats played last evening in Hartney against the Yellowhead Chiefs.
This would be the first season matchup between the two teams.
The Cats outshot the Chiefs 21-8 after the first 20 minutes and put two goals up on the scoreboard for the First period. The first goal coming from Ashleigh Brykaliuk with help from Megan Robertson, the second it was Jaycee Magwood with Karissa Haney assisting. The Second period saw each team pressuring in and around the net, the Cats scored again this time from Karissa Haney assisted by Melissa Hunt and Ashleigh Brykaliuk.The Third period with the Cats handed three penalties in the first 10 minutes. One of which was a 5 on 3 powerplay but the Chiefs were unable to put one on the scoreboard. The remainder of the period the Chiefs still trying to get one past the Wildcat goalie and continuing with their traffic in the crease but Campbell again denying them.
WILDCATS WON  3-0.  Kristen Campbell picked up her 4th shutout.

Saturday, October 13th was an Exciting Day for the Westman Wildcats @ Harney Community Arena

The Wildcats had an Exciting Day this past Saturday!! They had an early start joining all the young participants for the One Goal Try Hockey Day and the Annual Hockey Jamboree. The Wildcats also played the Central Plains Capitals for their FIRST MMFHL LEAGUE GAME AT HOME. Game time was 8:00pm and there was a good crowd on hand at the Hartney Community Arena.

WESTMAN WILDCATS WIN HOME OPENER !!
The Wildcats were without four players on their roster; Karissa Kirkup, Jessica Vallotton, Ashleigh Brykaliuk and Kjierstan Wallace. From the first puck drop, it was a very physical game. There were 23 penalties handed out with 14 going to the Wildcats and 9 going to the Capitals. It was a game where the Wildcats dominated the Capitals 5 on 5. Every Wildcat contributing at a total effort for 60 minutes. The Cats committing to blocked shots at even strengh and during the penalty kill and having to kill off (3) 5 on 3's. Campbell in goal, with bodies in front of her on the power plays she stopped alot of point blank shots.

The Wildcats got the first goal midway through the First Period, it was from Karissa Haney with help from Jaycee Magwood. The end of this period the scoreboard showed it was a 1-0 game. Starting the Second Period the Caps with a power play got a goal. This period saw the Cats getting 7 more penalties and the Capitals handed 4 penalties. The shots on goal equal for each team. Both teams at full strength, it was Melissa Hunt with just over a minute left in the second period, stipping the puck from a Capitals player at the blue line and racing towards the net with a player in pursuit...shot one at the goalie and with her determination got the quick rebound to score. It was now a 2-1 game for the Cats. The Third Period saw physical play intensifying and both teams with equal penalties. Just before the game ended, Jaycee Magwood got an empty netter with assists going to Melissa Hunt and Courtney Ganske. WILDCATS WON 3-1.

One Goal Try Hockey Day and Wildcats Hockey Jamboree
The Wildcats on Saturday October 13th, hosted a One Goal Try Hockey Day for participants to have an opportunity to learn the basic fundamentals of the game and received equipment which was sponsored by OneGoal. It was also the Annual Hockey Jamboree for registered participants. It was a special day for the 46 girls (ages 4-10) who started arriving at noon to register for their selected programe. They all received their own Wildcat T-shirt to wear for the day and spent a full afternoon with the Westman Wildcats. The Wildcats interacted with the girls on the ice, doing dryland and games, had a spaghetti supper together. The girls had a chance to tour the Wildcats dressing room and hear Hockey Talk from the coaches. At the end of the Day, everyone was presented a certificate for their particpation and seeing each of their Big Smiles it was obviously a very fun day for all of them! The girls were also invited to attend the Wildcats home opener in the evening.

The Westman Wildcat organization would like to congratulate Ashleigh Brykaliuk from Brandon, Karissa Kirkup from Virden, and Jessica Vallotton from Ninette on their recent accomplishment on making the cut for Team Manitoba. Team Manitoba will compete at the U-18 National Championships to be held in Dawson Creek, B.C. From November 7-11. Follow the girls here during the tournament as we keep the wildcat fans updated on how the girls are doing. Good luck girls from the Wildcat organization!

One Goal Try Hockey Day and Hockey Jamboree

 

We are excited and looking forward to the One Goal Try Hockey Day and the Hockey Jamboree that are being held this Saturday, October 13th at the Hartney and Community Arena.  The arena is located at 51 Garden Street.  Phone number at the arena is 858 – 2135.     Below is a list of participants in each of the programs for the day and a schedule for the afternoon.   If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at 204 483-5214 or 204 858-2183 or drop us a quick note by email.  We would suggest that you bring along a water bottle as well as runners for the games that will take place at the gym at the Hartney school.

Westman Wildcats play two Exhibition games on Sunday, October 7th 2012

Westman Wildcats played the Thunder Bay Queens at the Dakota Community Centre at 9:30am.

This game saw a battle on the boards. The game tied 2-2 after the first period. The first Cats goal came from Haney with an assist from Coey. The second goal found Coey putting one past the Queens goalie with assists from Brykaliuk and Whaley. The second period the Cats scored again this time from M. Robertson with assists going to Magwood and Dyck. Tilbury had 29 shots.

The next game, the fourth for the weekend for the Cats was against Shaftsbury Titans Prep Team from Winnipeg was played at the MTS Iceplex at 5:00pm.

This was a fast pace game, another battle on the boards.The first period saw the Titans score on a powerplay. It remained 1-0 until late in the second period. The Cats scored two goals in the third period.  Haney got the first Cats goal on the board with the assist going to Dyck. The second goal came from Magwood with a pass from Danis. The Titans scored again on the powerplay late in the third period. Campbell had 36 shots.
