CANADA OPENS U18 WORLDS WITH ROMP OVER SWISS

FÃœSSEN, GERMANY -After a 10-hour trip from Toronto to Munich to FÃ¼ssen, Canada's National Women's Under-18 Team hit the ice for its first game on Monday and lit up the scoreboard.

Casandra Langan (Chatham, ON/London, PWHL) scored four times and Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, ON/Ottawa, PWHL) added a hat trick of her own as Canada thumped the Swiss 16-1. The Canadians outshot Switzerland 80-7 overall.

Sixteen of Canada's 18 skaters recorded at least a point, led by four each from Langan and Laurie Kingsbury (Valleyfield, QC/SÃ©lects, Midget AA), who had a goal and three assists. Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, QC/Dawson College, CollÃ©gial AA), Jessica Wong (Baddeck, NS/Stoney Creek, PWHL) and Brianne Jenner (Oakville, ON/Mississauga, CWHL) also added two goals apiece.

Wong opened the scoring just past the five-minute mark of the opening period before Langan took over, scoring three times in 9:20 to complete her natural hat trick before the horn had sounded to end the opening 20 minutes.

Sophie Anthamatten replaced Sarah Kung in the Swiss goal to start the second period but it made no difference, as the Canadians peppered Anthamatten with 32 shots in her first 20 minutes of work.

Langan scored her fourth consecutive goal early in the middle frame to make it 5-0, and Jenner, who scored twice in the period, Wong, Jessica Campbell (Melville, SK/Pursuit of Excellence) and Rattray also scored to help Canada hit double digits before the second intermission.

Sarah Forster scored the lone goal for the Swiss just past the midway point of the second period, the only puck to beat Roxanne Douville (Beloeil, QC/Edouard-Montpetit, CollÃ©gial AA), who needed to make just six saves to record the victory.

With the game well in hand, Rattray scored twice in the third period to complete her hat trick, joined on the scoresheet in the final 20 minutes by Poulin, who scored both of her goals in the third, Kingsbury and Breann Frykas (East St. Paul, MB/Detroit Little Caesars, Midget AAA).

Canada looks to go 2-0 in preliminary round play on Tuesday when it faces Finland (8:30 a.m. EST).

Mac's Tournament Announces 2008 Participants

Calgary, Alberta, (December 10, 2008) -The Mac's Tournament Committee kicks off another Tournament with the announcement of the participants for the 31st Anniversary edition of the Mac's Tournament.

When this tournament began in 1978, people wanted to bring the best competition to the city and play a leadership role in advancing midget hockey. In light of the global economic conditions that have recently unfolded, we have had four international teams withdraw applications. We continue to strive to bring the best talent to Calgary to Experience the Mac's Experience and we feel that this year's group of teams will provide excellent competition as well as entertainment for the many fans of midget hockey. The Mac's Tournament is known worldwide as the best hockey tournament for midget-aged hockey players and this year's Tournament will be no exception.

The 31st annual Mac's Tournament will be held in Calgary from December 26, 2008 to January 1, 2009 Round Robin games will take place at the Max Bell Centre, Father David Bauer and Centennial Arenas and the Championship Finals will take place at the Pengrowth Saddledome. The Tournament will feature 25 of the top male midget teams from across Canada placed in 5 Divisions. There will be 15 female which have been placed in 3 Divisions. Three male and one female wildcard teams will join the winner of each pool in the playoffs.

Wildcat Christmas Skates Sunday 21^st & Monday 22^nd

The Westman Wildcats will be holding regular practices on the 21^st and 22^nd and are opening this to any Wildcat Alumni home for Christmas.

Sunday's practice is at 4:00pm and Monday's is at 6:30pm.

The Cats will be using these skates to gear up for the Mac's International Midget Tournament in Calgary.

Westman Wildcats Defeat Visiting Winnipeg Titans

The Westman Wildcats regional female midget hockey team hosted the Winnipeg Titans on Sunday in Hartney and skated to a 5-0 win.

Kiara Dekezel led the scoring for the Wildcats with three points, scoring a pair and adding an assist.

JD Durnin also scored a pair while Teal Crosson chipped in with one.

Darby Peaslee got the shut out in net, stopping all 11 shots .

Cat Paws for the game: The team recognized their 5 players that played for Team Manitoba at Nationals in Napanee, Britt Phillips, Amy Lee, Brandi Pollock, Tara Lacquette and Bridgette Lacquette. The Team also had a recognition and award ceremony for the Wildcats making U18 Team Canada and heading to Germany for the World Championships, Britt Phillips and Brigette Lacquette.

Bison women's hockey team recruits Caitlin MacDonald, Tara Lacquette and Kristin Cockerill for 2009-10 season

The Manitoba Bison women's hockey team looks ahead to the 2009-10 season by announcing three new recruits. Bisons head coach Jon Rempel is pleased to announce the commitment of Caitlin MacDonald, Tara Lacquette and Kristin Cockerill to the Bison program for the following season.

MacDonald, 16, is a skilled 5'8â€ defenceman finishing her prep school hockey with the Balmoral Hall Blazers. She is the current captain of the Blazers and has been with Balmoral Hall since grade 10. In her first year with Balmoral, she was chose Most Improved Players as the youngest player on the team. The Winnipeg native has also played for Team Manitoba in both 2007 and 2008. Prior to Balmoral, she played for the St. Mary's Academy Flames who won the city championships. Her hockey resume includes 2 years in the ‘AA' league before age advancing to the midget level with the APHA Rangers where they won City and Provincial Championships and placed second at the Western Canadian Championships.

Rempel commented, â€œCaitlin is one of the best young defenders in this province. She has tremendous physical skills and her upside is unlimited. At only 16 years old, she is already a two-time member of Team Manitoba and also wears the "C" at Balmoral Hall, a testament to her leadership abilities, her maturity and her ability to play the game. The coaching staff is very pleased that Caitlin has decided to pursue her academic and athletic career at the University of Manitoba and we are excited to have her as part of our program for the next five years.â€

Lacquette, 17, is a top goalie prospect coming from Westman Wildcat Regional Female Midget Team. The Mallard, MB native was part of the Team Manitoba U18 team at the last two Nationals (2008 and 2007) and was invited to Hockey Canada's Identification camp during June 2008. In the 2007-08 season, the 5'5â€ goaltender received the MVP award for the 2008 ‘AAA' Comets Classic tournament; won League with Parkland Panthers and selected the MVP and Top Goaltender award at Midget boys Provincials. In addition, Lacquette won Midget boys Provincials and League with Winnipegosis Tigers in 2006-2007 season. She has also been a member of the Parkland Panthers since the 2002-03 season.

Rempel enthused, â€œ"Tara is one of the best young goalies in the province and in Canada. Her work ethic, desire to improve and character are all things that will make her transition to University hockey and our Bison program a smooth one. Tara will do whatever it takes to help her teammates and also do the all of the things she needs to in order to achieve her personal goals. Tara is also an outstanding student who has lofty academic goals and wants to prepare herself for her future at Manitoba. Our coaching staff is very excited at having Tara as part of our program for the next five years and having the opportunity to help her achieve her athletic and academic goals.â€

Cockerill, 17, is a accomplished 5'8â€ right/left defenceman finishing her prep school hockey with the Balmoral Hall Blazers. She has been with Balmoral Hall since grade 10 and was chose Most Improved Players in grade 11 year. The Selkirk, MB native has also played for Team Manitoba in 2008. Also in summer of 2008, playing for her summer team Reece's Pieces and part of championship of the U19 American Division Tier 1 International Cup Tournament. Prior to Balmoral, her hockey resume includes being part of U16 Champions of the Minnesota Wild Tournament May 2006 (U14 age) - Manitoba Lightning Summer ‘AAA ‘; U14 Champions of the Subway Classic Tournament May 2006 - Manitoba Lightning Summer ‘AAA'; U16 Champions of the Minnesota Meltdown Tournament April 2006 (U14 age) - Manitoba Lightning Summer ‘AAA'; City Champions - Selkirk Fishermen Bantam ‘AA' 2005-06 Season; Named to Bantam ‘AA' All-Star team 2005-06; U14 Champions of the Minnesota Meltdown 2005 (Team Captain) - Manitoba Lightning Summer ‘AAA'; City Championship Finalist - Selkirk Fishermen Bantam ‘AA' 2004-05 Season.

Cockerill is also an accomplished runner who made Top 10 in Provincial Cross Country Championships in Fall 2007 and Provincial High School Championships silver medal performance in the 3000m in 2007. Plus, she completed grade 11 and 10 year with Honors.

Rempel said, â€œ"Kristin has improved tremendously over the last couple of years and is going to have an immediate impact in the Bison lineup next season with her physical style of play and high-energy tempo. Kristin is a team-oriented player with great character and leadership abilities that has gained a lot of valuable experience at Balmoral Hall and with Team Manitoba playing against other high level players from high level programs. An excellent student-athlete, Kristin will be a great addition to the Bison program.â€

Bison women's hockey notes: The #3 ranked Bison women's hockey team (14-0-0) hosts a six team non-conference tournament at the start of the New Year. Manitoba will play #2 ranked Wilfrid Laurier (15-0-0) on Friday, January 2 at 7 p.m. The Bisons will then battle the Minnesota Thoroughbreds on Saturday, January 3 at 11:30 a.m. prior to playoff round on Jan. 3 evening. Other teams involved are Lethbridge, Regina and Balmoral Hall. The gold and bronze medal games are scheduled on Sunday, January 4 at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. All games held at the Max Bell Arena.

Westman Wildcats Tara Lacquette Commits to the University Of Manitoba Bisons

The Westman Wildcat Regional Female Midget Team is proud to announce that goaltender Tara Lacquette has committed to the University of Manitoba Bisons.

Lacquette, from Mallard, is a standout goalie that has established herself as one of the premier goalie her age in Canada. Lacquette backstopped the Team Manitoba U18 team at the last two Nationals and was invited to Hockey Canada's Identification camp last summer in Calgary.

Lacquette is the second Wildcat committing this season following Brittany Phillips commitment to the NCAA DI Colgate Raiders.

Lacquette will join the Canada West leading University of Manitoba Bisons next fall and will join fellow Westman product Nellie Minshull in their quest for a CIS National Championship.
