Westman Wildcats Jenna-Marie Durnin Commits to the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns

The Westman Wildcats regional female midget team is proud to announce that Jenna-Marie Durnin has committed to play for and attend the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns beginning in the fall of 09.

Durnin, a senior from Wawanesa, is fast skating forward that will bring offense and speed to the Pronghorn line-up next fall.

Durnin will be joining former Wildcat Brandon's Amy Vanbuskirk, a freshman with the Pronghorns this season.

Durnin is the fourth Westman senior to commit this year following Brittany Phillips to Colgate University, Tara Lacquette to the University of Manitoba and Laura Williams to NAIT College.  

Wildcats Sweep Thunder Bay Queens

The Westman Wildcat regional Female Midget hockey team swept the Thunder Bay Queens in double header action Friday and Saturday.

The Friday game saw the Cats score one in the opening period by Deloraine's Kiara Dekezel from Kels Scott.

The Westman squad outscored the Queens in the second 3-1 on goals by Mallards Brig Lacquette, Souris's Sheryl Kaskiw and Lauders Britt Phillips with assists Brandi Pollock and Phillips.

The third period had the two teams play scoreless hockey for a Cats 4-1 win. Mallard's Tara Lacquette stopped 21 shots for the win while the Wildcats fired 36 at the Queens net.

Saturday had the Cats again score the lone goal of the first period by Dekezel from Pollock and Kayleigh Chapman.

The second period had three more Westman goals from Souris's Scott, Wawanesa's JD Durnin and Phillips with helpers going to Amy Lee, Laura Williams, Scott and a pair to Kaskiw.

The third period was scoreless for a four nothing shut out for the Wildcats. Souris's Darby Peaslee stopped all 21 shots for the shut out.

Westman Wildcats Laura Williams Signs With The NAIT Ooks

Westman Wildcats regional female midget team is proud to announce that Souris product Laura Williams has signed with the NAIT Ooks of the ACAC.

Williams, a Senior at Souris High School, is a forward with the Westman Wildcats and will be attending Northern Alberta Institute of Technology(NAIT) next fall and playing with the Ooks in the Alberta Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Williams will be playing against her sister Amanda who is attending SAIT College and a 08 graduate of the Westman Wildcats.

Williams is the third player this season on the Wildcats to commit for next fall following Brittany Phillips to Colgate and Terra Lacquette to the University of Manitoba Bisons.

Westman Wildcats Capture Saskatoon Stars AAA Annual Classic

The Westman Wildcats Regional Female Midget Hockey team travelled to Saskatoon along with 11 other midget teams to participate in the Saskatoon Stars AAA Hockey classic.

The Cats played their first game Friday at noon against the Battleford Sharks of the Saskatchewan AAA league. The Westman squad roared to a 9-1 win with Brit Phillips leading the way with 6 points.

The Wildcats second action brought them up against the Winnipeg AP Rangers. The Cats beat the Rangers 4-1 to win their pool and take them to the semi-finals.

This semi final action saw the Westman team playing the Yellowhead Chiefs. Darby Peaslee got the shutout in a 5-0 win for the Wildcats while teammate Amy Lee notched 4 points and Phillips netted the hat trick to take them to the finals on Sunday.

The tournament finals had the Wildcats matched against the Kelowna Pursuit of Excellence. The Kelowna squad came out fast and had the Cats down 2-1 at the end of one. The Westman team responded in the second and scored four times to go into the final period up 5-2. The Wildcats only allowed the Kelowna team one in the third to win the tournament with a 5-3 score.

The Wildcats next action is next weekend against the Thunder Bay Queens.

Wildcats Complete Two Game Series with Balmoral Hall

The Westman Wildcats Regional Female Midget Team played a two game series with the Balmoral Hall Blazers on the Weekend in Wawanesa.

In the first match Saturday night The Cats came out strong and Lauder's Brit Phillips scored on the first shift from Brandon's Amy Lee.

Phillips netted her second half way through the first from Lee and Wawanesa's JD Durnin.

Souris product Laura Williams rounded out the scoring for the Cats in the first while the Blazers potted two of their own to end the first 3-2.

The teams had a scoreless second and Balmoral pressed hard in the third and scored one to end the game tied at three.

Souris's Darby Peaslee stopped 36 of 39 Balmoral shots.

Sunday's game had Balmoral coming out fast getting two in the opening frame.

The Wildcats potted one in the first by Waterhen's Brig Lacquette from Phillips.

Both teams registered singles in the second with Souris's Kelsie Scott scoring for the Cats.

The Wildcats pressed hard in the third but were unable to come up with the tying marker, ending the game BH up 3-2.

Tara Lacquette stopped 39 of 42 Balmoral shots for the Cats.

Brandon, Manitoba -- An 18-year old hockey player from Lauder, Manitoba will be recognized during this Friday's Western Hockey League game at Westman Place between the Brandon Wheat Kings and visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.

Brittany Phillips was a member of the Canadian team that recently captured a silver medal at the IIHF Under 18 Womens World Championships in Fussen, Germany.

The Canadian entry lost out to the defending champion United States in the gold medal final earlier this month.

A cousin to current Wheat King Del Cowan, Brittany will be honoured as January's recipient of the Wheat Kings' Manitoba Blue Cross Performer of the Month Award.

A current member of the Westman Wildcats, a highly competitive program based out of southwestern Manitoba, the Hartney School student plans to attend Colgate University (NCAA Division 1) in New York this fall.

Brittany becomes the third recipient of the Manitoba Blue Cross Performer of the Month recipient for 2008-09. This year marks the fifth season that western Manitoba hockey fans have been given the opportunity to visit the Wheat Kings' official web site and nominate coaches, volunteers, athletes and officals for this prestigious award.

Friday's game will be the first of back to back home games for the Wheat Kings this weekend. Brandon will take on the visiting Kootenay Ice the following night.

Westman Wildcats lose to University of Saskatchewan Huskies in OT

The Westman Wildcats regional female midget hockey team travelled to Lampman on Saturday to participate in Hockey Saskatchewan's “Hockey Day in Saskatchewan”.

Their game with the number nine ranked CIS University of Saskatchewan Huskies topped of a day in Lampman that had seen two other All-Star Games.

Both Saskatchewan AAA Midget males and female leagues had played their annual classics prior to this feature contest.

This game proved to be the highlight game of the day with both teams putting on a great show for the capacity crowd gathered to watch.

The first period had lots of action but neither team could dent the twine and going into the second the score remained knotted at goose eggs.

The Huskies got on the score sheet first going up by one early in the second.

The “Cats” responded by potting two in the middle frame to go into the break up 2-1.

The first goal was scored by Oak Lake's Meg Bailey with assists going to Souris's Laura Williams and Virden's Kayleigh Chapman. The second marker was scored by Wawanesa native JD Durnin, from Brandon's Amy Lee and Lauder's Brit Phillips.

The Huskies pressed hard in the third and tied up the game forcing OT.

In Overtime the Huskies managed to score the winner on a power play marker.

“Cat Paws” for the game. The Wildcats played very short staffed with a rash of injuries shortening the bench, with only 12 skaters dressing to play. Souris native Darby Peaslee stopped 43 of 46 shots sent her way, while the Cats fired 37 at the Huskies goalies. The Wildcats took 5 of 9 minors. The Wildcats next action is Saturday and Sunday in Wawanesa against the Balmoral Hall Blazers.

Female development event to be hosted February 14-16 in Winnipeg

Hockey Manitoba in part with Hockey Canada are pleased to host a Female Development Weekend from February 14-16th in Winnipeg. The weekend events will run from Saturday, Feb 14th to Monday, Feb 16th (Louis Riel Day).
